Hello, Everyone!
My name is Gary and I'm new to this group; I've been a Weber kettle enthusiast since I was a teenager and the thrill of the coals hasn't left me yet at 41. I've never owned a gas grill (I know there are Weber gas grill guys out there, not knocking ya!) and work with my Performer, One-Touch Gold, 18 inch portable and Smokey Joe for all of my grilling needs...too many according to my wife; I've assured her there is always a need for each.
This past summer, I had a large gathering at my house and while I was grilling on my Performer, I wished that I had a true upper cooking area where I could grill, warm or expand my indirect smoking surface...something much more versatile than the Weber 3200 rack that comes with the Master Touch series grills. I happen to manufacture grill accessories ( as well as other items) for a living and I got to work making a prototype. After some time, I'm happy to announce to all of you that I'm in full production of what I'm calling the Upper Deck rack; my primary sales platform is Amazon. After visiting this site, I now realize my product is very similar the the old, 1970's Elevated Half Grill, but it IS different, and to my knowledge, the EHG is not available on the market any longer.
I'd like to know if any of you might be interested in getting a Upper Deck at no charge in return for an HONEST review on Amazon. If you love it as much as I do, great! If you think improvements can be made, let me know; if you hate it, please tell me. I can only handle 10 giveaways, so I will honor the first 10 folks who reach out to me at the email below.
Guys, being new to this site and not seeing any posted rules, if I'm out of line with this posting, please accept my apologies in advance. I'm just looking for honest feedback from Weber nuts like me as I try to launch this product that I think we be loved by any 22 inch kettle owner. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

@Gary@315 I got the confirmation. Thanks a million. Looking forward to the code tomorrow. Looking even more forward to trying it out.
That is something that I would enjoy using on my Drum Smokers as well as the kettles and 22" WSM's. If you are interested in appealing to those markets as well, I would be interested in helping.

Guys....thank you all for your enthusiastic responses to my product! I've reached my 10 unit review max and I look forward to hearing back from all of you!
ENJOY!!!
Hi Gary, looks like a great item. Quick question, are these bad boys made in the USA or overseas at the moment?
Well damn, looks like I'm late to the party :-( Nice looking product though.
I see you are making it out of stainless and it's priced at $34.99. I know a lot of us would like real stainless flip up grates for less than the $75 that Weber charges. Is that something you would consider producing?
Wow, I wish I had gotten on this. I'm looking forward to the reviews. This is an accessory that I think I could use a lot.
Hi Gary,
Great idea!!!

Missed the giveaway but will be purchasing one anyway.
I would probably tend to use multiple kettles if needed for a large cook. Still there could be times your grate would be useful. I was thinking, if you can produce your grate in stainless, I was wondering what you could produce a full stainless grate for? I would really like to have one. Chrome plating eventually fails and rusts if neglected. Sometimes I think unplated steel would be better. At least it could be seasoned like cast iron.
I have the elevated rack that came with the smokenator. It's handy for doing several racks of ribs in the 26. Smoking ribs is the only thing I've found it useful for so far. Maybe a second brisket? Don't know I haven't tried that but looks like it would work.

Or maybe would allow enough room for a chicken cut flat and a couple racks of ribs. I'll have to try that.

I received my upper deck this morning and can confirm that it's made in China. This isn't a knock on the unit itself, it's feels very well made. I would do a full review today, but already have the WSM going, so I won't get around using it until tomorrow or this weekend.
Just got mine today. Super solid piece man. Great work. Pix to come

Well, I wrote a review. I've never done that before, but this is a good product to start with. I'm very happy with the build on this grate.
Teaser for my review- (I haven't even taken it completely out of the box but initial impressions from the quick peek are how thick and sturdy the build quality is)

Found on Amazon Here-
Stainless Steel Warming Rack and Grill Grate- For Use with 22.5 Inch Weber Kettle- Charcoal Grilling Accessory (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IU7HJNU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) As I said before the build quality is thick like Weber's Gourmet Grate System.
Here is how I started out. A regular smoke set-up using the snake method. The Country Style Pork Ribs offset of the coals with apple chunk and cherry wood chips.
Next to add the Upper Deck. It fit right in place and there were no issues with clearance of the lid.
(https://northeastbbqdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/20161004_101206-01.jpeg?w=978)(https://northeastbbqdotcom.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/20161004_101215-01.jpeg?w=978)
The Upper deck provides a whole lot of extra space. it is billed as a warmig rack but I think where it will shine is with that huge amount of extra space it affords you when smoking.
Next I dropped onto the Upper Deck a porcetta roast and set up the Maverick remote thermometer.

When the country style pork ribs had the color I wanted I slid a Weber disposable tin pan under with some Sweet Baby rays and coated the ribs, then covered with aluminum foil to let them braise for about 40 minutes. The tin pan fit perfectly under the Upper Deck unit allowing a continuation of indirect cooking while still having the porcetta roast unfazed on the "Upper Deck"

@ Travis- I have one coming to me from Gary. The issue is that Amazon.com will not ship to Canada. >:( It will be awhile before he says he can set anything up in .ca for me to pick up for free. Or I can pay $40 shipping now to get one which is more than the item itself.
So, I suggested to Gary if I can give my prom-code to someone and buy one for myself when he set it up on .ca. I just got a word from Gary that I could do as I wish. So, if you want one.... say so. I will send my prom-code to you via PM.

That is correct! Everyone who got one including Travis can not leave a review on Amazon. As of 10/3, Amazon changed their policy and reviews for products that were given away at a discount are banned. They are suspending seller accounts over this is what I was told. Gary has been nice enough to fill me in on all the details. I am sure all 9 of you got the e-mail from Gary not to put in reviews on Amazon.com. 1 review already in before 10/3.
Real tough break for a Grillfella who is trying to launch his product that lot of us may want to have. I wonder for members here that buys one can do a honest review on the Amazon.com and link it to reviews of other 9 done here later. Just a thought if the upper rack happens to be a great product, than why not.
I would honestly encourage any of you guys to buy one. This thing is really well made. HD SS and all welds are ground smooth.

I will totally be in for a affordable, well made, ss flip grate.
As for the review, I'll post something here when it comes in and I get to use it for sure. Really looking forward to it. It is a downer about the Amazon ordeal, but I can understand. I'm on board with the Upper Deck... ordering one today. I would love to see a stainless version of the Gourmet grill grate as well...
Guys,
Thanks for all of your reviews, comments, suggestions and overall interest in my Upper Deck grate! I truly appreciate all of the positive feedback as well as for your understanding with the Amazon situation. They change the rules without notice and BAM, your account is done.....amazing, right? Unreal, actually. A big thanks and shout out to you guys for looking out for me in the forum and for your willingness to help make this product a success... y'all are the best; I mean that.
So...just to reiterate once more....please, if you were one of the guys who received the free Deck, don't leave a review on Amazon under any circumstances. I DO, of course, welcome feedback on WKC, blogs, my personal email or anything outside of the Bezo's empire. :-). Now...if you BUY the Deck at full, listed price on Amazon, they are happy to accept your review. Ahh...the nature of things these days...
OK....on to the fun stuff...I've been on the road with work for the past few days, so I apologize for my lack of response to your questions/comments. So here we go!
Some of you guys asked where my product is made...I work with a very trusted manufacturer in China that produces at MY tested and approved quality standards. I think you guys who have the Deck can attest to the level of quality I require in order to take a product to market.
After reading all of your suggestions, it looks like an SS201 or SS304 hinged, flip grate would be something of value to you guys. So....I'm going to produce both and have them added to my line up. I'll let all of you know when they arrive!
Smokey Joe guys....what are your thoughts on an Upper Deck for the Smokey?
Thanks again for all of your feedback and support. I hope to get out on the kettle this weekend myself for round two with my Slow N'Sear. Pork butt on the lower, ribs on the deck.
Gary,
Great quality. Can't wait to use it.
I think an upper deck for an 18 would be a better idea.

In layman's terms, what would be the difference between the two grades of stainless, and what would be the cost difference? I guess I'm not sure I'd see the point in offering both.

304 has a higher nickel content and should be more corrosion resistant. Good for food applications.

kettlebb is absolutely correct. The 304 is a higher grade SS (more nickel) and provides excellent corrosion resistance, comes at a higher cost point.
First cook on the 2nd Gen Performer I picked up last night-
Chicken thighs/ smashed red bliss potatoes using the Upper Deck for increased offset cooking space. Zero chance of getting this much food on the cooker with just a regular grate.

To Gary and others who suggested flip up SS cooking grates to be made.
To be successful for Gary, his product has to be attractive in quality and price point against his competition. Currently there are Weber 4mm SS and Grill Care SS 4mm flip up grates available. Weber is at $50 and Grill Care at $20 on Amazon with 5 year warranty, and here in Canada I can get one for $30 Can. I am getting one this weekend for my new Green grill.
Here is the Grill Care SS Grate.
IMO, Gary has to make them like 5mm thick and at around mid $40-$50 to be successful. Of course, it has to be quality product like your Upper Deck from what I can tell. I would check out Grill Care before lunching your version. Maybe you already know this but I wasn't sure. We all want you to be successful in your venture so that you can continue to bring out what we want. So I thought I mention this.
True but you have to consider the materials and quality. I haven't seen the other grates in person but Gary's elevated grate is pretty damn sweet. If he made like flip grates out of 304 SS and they were under $50 I'd be all over it. Do you know if the Weber or other grates are 304 SS?
Crimson Performer Platinum "AH", Red MT "P", Red Mist SSP "EZ", Faded Black "A", Black OTG "DE".

That is exactly my point. Without knowing the competition, in this case Grill Care, we can not say for sure if or how future Gary's SS grates will stack up or how it should be priced based on materials and quality like you said. Maybe the Grill Care at $20 might be just as high quality in SS grade as would Gary's at $50. Now that would not make much business sense for the seller or for buyers.
I'd be all over it too at under $50. But not so simple for Gary lunching a new product. I think Gary will bring out high quality grates but still needs to do his homework if he has not done yet. I am all for suggesting a great product. I just hope his product is better and a good price point is all I am saying.
Thanks for the input, guys. I haven't checked out the Grill Care line, but at $20, I can't imagine SS 304 is being used. I'm working on the details now; will keep you guys updated
CaptJoe......awesome pics! Thanks for posting!!
@Gary@315. Got your product yesterday. Out of the box it looks well made for sure. Clean welds, Doesn't feel flimsy, or cheap.
It's a drizzly day today so what a better time to try it out!
20 abt's on the "Upper Deck", 2 pork steaks and 2 kielbasa links on the bottom. No way could I fit all this on a 22 grate. I would have used my 26r.
So far fella's, I'm happy. I think the size is right. Imo, if it were bigger it might be difficult to reach meat on the bottom grate. After this cook and if I have time before work, I'm going to dial up the heat and try some wings.
I noticed about a 25-30 degrees difference between the two racks before food went on. I've got a maverick on the bottom, nestled between the proteins and an oven thermos on top. It's reading pretty even with the lid thermo.

As for SS Grill Care grate I just bought is not SS 304 grade. It failed the magnet test. I still think it is better than Weber chrome plated grate. I don't have Weber SS flip up grate to compare but my Gas Genesis SS grate pass the test. I have edited previous post to reflect my new finding.
Love to check out and compare when Gary brings out his version.
@greenweb. I just went out with a magnetic bottle opener and checked. No stick. Now, the grill is still going so I don't know if that counts. I didn't clean the tested area, but did place it on the underside and it fell off. Does that count or does it need to be cool and clean?

You did not have to do that, but thanks! That is good! Most likely the top grade SS. Gary could verify this for us later.
Looking forward to his SS flip up grates.
Wow this looks awesome. I have a DIY second grate I use for adding turds to smoke as a snack while I am doing a longer smoke on the main grate. Makes it so easy to load up the second grate as you are making the turds, carry it outside, remove the lid, then place the second grate on and get the lid back on in about 10 seconds. This grate here looks way easier to place on than my DIY grate and it looks like you could fit two of them at once if you wanted or needed to.
Travis...thanks for testing out the grate and for your review.....pics are AWESOME!
Do any of you guys mind if I use your pics on Amazon?
@greenweb....the Upper Deck is made from SS 201. BTW.....do you have a link to the Grill Care grate you mention? I can't seem to find it when I search. Thanks!
Don't think the heat would matter. As long as it's not like one of the flimsy magnets from the pizza place, I wouldn't think a little grime would matter much.
Travis, pic #3 is beautiful. Did you do that with a phone?
Also, why am I unsurprised that your only handy magnet is attached to a bottle opener?

Here is for 18". For some reason, it is more $ than the 22". https://www.amazon.com/Grill-Care-17433-Stainless-Compatible/dp/B00TEBDRWY
When I picked up 22" Grill Care, they also had 18" for lot less $. This is all I can find on 22". I think this is it. https://www.amazon.com/Weber-7436-Replacement-Hinged-Cooking/dp/B000WEPHKW/ref=sr_1_4?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1476317463&sr=1-4&keywords=ss+grate
Here is the one I picked up here in Canada.

I found few more that might be an interest to you.
Not sure if this is same as the Grill Care. It says it is thicker than oem.

They also offer non flip up grate for less $.
Don't forget Weber also offers SS flip up grates too.
Thanks, greenweb.
Finally had the need to use the upper deck I got from Gary.
Works so well for extra wings around the vortex! Just flipped them so we'll see how they turn out, but you know it'll be great.
Thanks again @Gary@315!
