That's actually a British Thompson Houston subway car controller.  I just got anreverser key for it today so I was able to finally unlock it and crank it over to full power in that picture.

You know, the resemblance didn't occur to me until you posted that picture.  They really do look similar given there's no sense of scale there.  That wooden grip on the handle is large enough to fit in the palm of your hand.  It's a shame someone pried off the B T-H builder's plate as a souvenir at some point before it came to me.

Definitely larger than a telegraph key and, trust me, a lot heavier. I took chunks out of my concrete basement floor rolling it onto its back to take the cover off. The guys are built like a tank.
