Okay so then I got to thinking....we all have some kind of other interests. What about a thread of pictures of other cool stuff besides Webers? It is the off topic section. As you can see from my avatar picture and nick-name, I love VW bugs. While I maybe only 31, I have owned 5 to date ranging from 1964-74. My 1st was a 66, followed by a 74 super, a 67, a 69, and finally a 64. Loved them all except the super, it always gave me heartache. My current 64 has a love-hate relationship with me, but it hasn't failed me yet.

Last year of mites. He's a big guy. Just turned nine, 4' 8" and 103 lbs.
Wow, same with mine. He turned nine last Nov, he'll be a squirt next year, he's 4'10" and 110. And the colored tape on the helmet to find him in the crowd too. Mine also plays another ice sport, Bandy. Think field hockey on a soccer field sized sheet of ice.

I'm with vwbuggin except all vw types are my love affair I do prefer the buses, tho. My first was a 72 camper then a 61 camper, then a 63 15 window, 73 thing, 65 bug, 69 squareback, and currently my 62 single cab, which I love! It's rockstar status in my eyes. Still own the thing too. They all were very nice too. And I'm 32.

This is my 1966 that is currently my daily driver. I picked her up a couple years ago and she has a 1671cc engine in her. Somewhere along the line the car was in an accident (on the driver's side there is bondo and I didn't notice at time of purchase) BUT she runs and drives great. Also, I recently picked up the original roof rack a few weeks back! Also, the decklid is same mismatched color as the boot and it looks awesome.

Yes, I wish I could just afford a piece of his. As long as I like his work though I wont be able to complain about kettle prices. When his exhibit was here the only thing I bought was some post cards to send to my grandmother who is also a fan of his. These pictures were the second time I had seen his work. I am now thinking of planning a trip to see one of his exhibits somewhere else.

Plenty of airflow, it gets hot as hell if you keep stoking it. This one is SS so it doesn't rust and 5here is no enamel to spall.
If it turned slowly that would look cool.

These are Labatt Blue beer bottle caps from the early 1980s. Pry-off before they switched to twist-off.
It was so-long to the stubby beer bottle (http://www.canadianliving.com/food/entertaining/canadian_beer_bottles_do_you_know_your_history.php), and hello to the eventual long-neck bottle.

thanks! it's an swamp ash strat body i've grain filled and begun finishing. it's a chambered (warmoth) body so it's very light weight and resonant.
i still haven't decided if the burst is going to be brown or black around the edges, possibly a combination of the two. the neck will be a very non-typical mahogany/rosewood combination in 24.75" scale, which is more les paul-ish than a typical strat 25.5" scale length.
should be done in, eh, a couple months at minimum. lacquer takes a good month to dry before you can think about wetsand and polishing it like glass. :D

My Son has an ongoing (3+ years so far) Strat project that'll blow your mind, I'll find some pics of it.

I play a LOT of acoustic stuff and this is my pride and joy 1980-1983 ( closest record from factory) Alvarez 5013 "Ironhorse" my Dad hand picked for me in 1986 as a Christmas gift. He found it in a pawn shop and loved it so...I love it too. I installed a Fishman Presys system in it last weekend so now I can gig with it.

My stockpile of hickory - this was a nice tree that fell in the woods maybe 20 yards from my house. I spent the better part of the winter of 2013-2014 bucking it, splitting it with an axe, humping it out of the woods with a wheelbarrow, and stacking it. It came out to a cord - almost precisely. It's perfectly seasoned now - after two years - and the stack is still standing up nicely.

as much as I can use will go to cooking! either in chunks or burned down to coals for ribs in my barrel smoker. I've got plenty of other firewood for the fireplace and the fire pit. As it gets older and buggy, as hickory often does, I'll use it for the fireplace.
I've got no shortage of hickories...three more smaller hickories are growing too close to the house and will have to come down soon

it was a gorgeous tree - a good 40 feet to the first branch and 24" diameter at breast height. If it hadn't fallen wedged between rocks and other trees, it might have been lumber.

I have dozen or so humming birds swarming my porch constantly, they're territorial / entertaining & they do have some stunning colors
Great photos, they can be hard to photograph, but its a cool hobby for some..

Some of the ideas of combining good snack products with regular foods doesn't work so well....for instance I think the doritos tacos at Taco Bell are nowhere close to as tasty as it sounds....however, I think these mac-n-cheetos are going to be awesome.
Sounds like they will be in SoCal Burger King locations starting Monday....would love to here from a few of our SoCal guys about how these are!!!

@Jon, that's great that you rescue. Of the four that we have had 2 were rescues and 2 we got as pups. Our 4 year old female is in the Golden Retriever life time study that the Morris Animal Foundation is doing. They are tracking 3,000 goldens for their lifetime, extensive yearly exams and environmental questions. They are hoping to find why goldens tend to get cancer at such a high rate. Our 4 year old male is a rescue.

My great-grandfather shaved with it, and he passed it down to my grandpa. I took it and cleaned it up and use it on special occasions. It's a 1929 Bostonian. Always use Dorco 301 blades or Personnas in it, nothing else.

Cool story. I bought a Super Sport (i.e. Gillette ...) made in the year of my birth, which I normally use except when traveling. Tried a few DE blades; I think my "beard" is considered "rough" and that's made blade selection curious ... disposables are great/better in some ways but I prefer DE when I can.

@dazzo @kettlebb , sorry guys I just dont get the whole spicy thing, I'm just too white. Although my mexican coworkers are trying to help me with that...LOL. Last week I ate a thumbnail size piece of some teeny tiny pepper, I was told it was a habanero, the girl told me it was more "sweet" than hot....WRONG! that little fucker was blazin!! but I did live to tell about it, you'll notice that my eyes are unable to see anything due to the extreme blood pressure, I assure you i WAS NOT sunburned. But all fun, she is after all the one who "tutors" me in my mexican dishes and she even came to the house to show me how to make my own tortillas.

It's all good @varekai. Hot is relative and my limit is at the ghost pepper. They get more mild if you really clean them when cutting them up. Is it pretty difficult making tortillas at home?

@kettlebb , true, to each their own. lol Tortillas are not hard,I had bought a tortilla press at the local swapmeet and was dying to use it, but there is definitely a technique. She was so smooth to watch and I just couldn't get the hang of it. I think I was able to get 1 of about 24 into the pan without screwin it up... I wanted her to show me, I think I was just in her way, LOL. She was here about an hour and made a batch of Mexican rice and around 2 dozen tortillas. I want to have her out again and this time use my GoPro. She is incredible.

I don't like heat just for heat, but I enjoy the spice.

Funny, but I'm on the ground side we don't have far to fall when we get drunk. Those are actually a annual charity deal Jack Daniels and Southwest do every year. My 2016 bottle should be here next week or so. JD donates the barrel and bottles and we buy them and all proceeds go to charity and its a good drink too!

One of my American friends wants to get a ham license but has been taking forever to do it. He keeps pestering me for technical information (that I can help with). But anything to do with FCC ham regulations, that's something I'm not familiar with at all.

I have one or two other antennas up for VHF and UHF as well. I have a few other antenna projects in the works. Your friend will like the hobby. There are so many facets you can get into. I've been in it almost 30 years since I was a kid.
Very neat pics! Is that an FM broadcast transmitter? In your other pics those appear to be large filters with copper coax exiting? The biggest coax I have around here is 1 5/8" Andrew hard line for a 1296mhz project I am slowly working on.
The racks look fairly similar to what I saw on a tour of WOR, AM 710 several years ago (they also had a nice Harris 50kw transmitter).

What my friend needs to do is read through the ARRL books he bought and write the exam and get licensed. Then he'll be free and clear to buy equipment and set up a station as time and money permits, instead of being perpetually being stuck at square one due to no license. For a while there, I was getting emails with different antennas and other gear with questions about recommendations etc. but it's been a while since he's sent me anything. I can't really help with any of the regulatory parts of the exam since the FCC and Industry Canada regulations aren't exact mirrors of eachother so he'll have to study up on that on his own. To be honest, I'm not totally up on the IC regs either.
As for the pictures, here's a guided tour: There are actually three broadcast FM transmitters in those racks, down from four a few years ago. Two radio stations go on air from there and each one had a pair of transmitters for redundancy. One pair got pulled and replaced with that modular Eddystone transmitter closest to the camera which has a pair of FM exciters (for redundancy) that are switched into the modular RF power amplifier section. Since that whole setup is modular and is fully redundant within itself, it wasn't doubled up with second separate transmitter. The modular architecture is similar to how Harris did those solid state 50 KW transmitters like what you probably saw on that WOR tour. You can see a legacy of the old four transmitter setup in the metering - there are still four sets of forward and reverse power RF wattmeters in the racks. There's a bunch of STL type equipment to bring in the audio which is then processed by Orban Optimods and fed to the transmitters, and some miscellaneous TV RF stuff for TV STL and off air monitoring.
There's an RF switching system to select the output of whichever transmitter is going to be used on air and the RF from each of the two live transmitters is fed into that combiner which is a network of several different filters. Each input is a bandpass for the frequency allocation of each of the two stations and a band block for the other station so that the transmitter outputs are very, very deeply attenuated with respect to eachother - but not the output section of the combiner which functions as an antenna tuning unit so that the combined output of both radio stations is applied to the same antenna system. That would be the three bowties at the top of the mast where two of them aimed at the city being served, one of them to the suburbs. Power levels are pretty low and the radiation pattern designed to minimize interference in the US since this site's pretty much right on top of the Canada/US border.
I wish I'd thought to take pictures of another transmitter site that had four Continental C317-B 50 KW machines all in a row. It was another two station facility where each station had a pair of transmitters for full redundancy and the outputs were combined into the same mast radiator. It got modernized a few years ago not long after I started with solid state Harris 50 KW machines for primary duty and smaller solid state backup transmitters instead of a fully duplicated A/B setup for each station. Those solid state Harris 50 KW machines are technologically interesting, power efficient, work well, and are totally boring. You know, the resemblance didn't occur to me until you posted that picture. They really do look similar given there's no sense of scale there. That wooden grip on the handle is large enough to fit in the palm of your hand. It's a shame someone pried off the B T-H builder's plate as a souvenir at some point before it came to me.

Definitely larger than a telegraph key and, trust me, a lot heavier. I took chunks out of my concrete basement floor rolling it onto its back to take the cover off. The guys are built like a tank.

@northwestkettle Great adventure ... Mayan Riviera is my favorite place by far. If you're heading South toward Tulum, then you gotta pull-off for some incredible pastries and lunch at the "Turtle Bay Cafe" in Akumal. Go South on #307, when you see the signs for Akumal turn left into the tourist's area, go through the gates and it's toward the left buried in the shops. We ate Breakfast there every day the whole trip :)

I've never tried doing a wet hop ale yet. We had such a hot dry summer my hops did pretty well even though I didn't water them as much as I should of. I need to get a few supply's and do a batch of beer soon I've been slacking on my brewing last couple years it's been far and in between but the hop harvest has got me excited to make a new batch I've got cascade hops sazz tetinger and fuggle but I've lost track of what plant is what hop except for the cascade hops it sucks getting old and loosing your mind lol

Did a take on my Mom's lasagna with ground beef, sausage meat, the good Italian mozzarella, Kraft Parmesan in the shaker, san marzano tomatoes, garlic, oregano and basil from the garden. The Kraft Parm is essential to the taste of this dish.

@Travis , that is the million dollar question. The grill is from the late 40's. The blower is forge, same as used by blacksmiths. Whomever must have tried to penetrate
the market with grill. It blows some serious air and is built like a tank. I have a video of firing up a chimney, but can't figure out how imbed it. I cooked on it, but it had
a Weber lid to retain some heat.

I use the "heavy duty" black Lodge sleeve, but frequently remove it during the cook, unless actively moving the pan. My wife puts the sleeve on and leaves it the whole time she uses the pan. The sleeve falls apart near the pan from the resulting heat abuse. Either that, or I'm willing to blame her for it. Would/could leather hold up any better, do you think?

Looks great, I just started messing around with leather working but have a long way to go. Mind if I ask what weight and cut leather you use for wallets? I'm starting to sort things out but shoulders vs bellies and tans etc gets confusing.

Oh no! Those are nice little accessories. I use the silicone ones but they still get hot. Leather would absolutely perform better. It’s natural fibrous structure lends to its fire retardant qualities. That being said, I still would not leave it on. It would dry out and get very hot. I’ll come back to this, my wife and I decided it would be smart to move to a new house with an 11 month old two weeks before Christmas. Once we are settled, I’ll make a few and post some pictures

OK here's one for ya. Does anyone else like to discover old forgotten grills and fire them up?
Some background: This is a concrete grill in the woods, in a park along Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River in Columbus Ohio. I have absolutely no idea how old it is.
I discovered it when I led a Friends of the Scioto River honeysuckle removal event in the park. Just look up "invasive honeysuckle" to see how the stuff grows to make an impenetrable undergrowth. We went through with saws and cleared all that out, and suddenly it was possible to see through the woods again. And, there was this grill which surely had not been used in decades. I suppose that when it was built, it was in open lawn, then due to a lack of grounds maintenance the woods grew up around it. Later came the honeysuckle, and it was lost to the world.
Later I went back with a friend and some camp chairs, and some charcoal and food. We brought our own rack because the original grate had huge gaps.
I plan go go back and fire it up again just to see if the park police spot smoke coming out from the woods and come to investigate. "You can't have a fire here, this is ... is ... um ... I didn't know this was here."
I confess, I am a local history dweeb.

That's awesome! My old red ear lived in our backyard and would go for dips in our swimming pool. We hung a 1x10" wooden plank off the edge so he could get in and out. Most kids put their turtles in a shoe box for show-and-tell. Ours used to travel in a medium sized puppy carrier. It was a cool turtle that lived a long, happy life in the backyard sunshine.

Blantons is awesome (when you can find it). The one to the right is Willett. Another favorite, but also hard to find. Basil Haden’s is a go to, as is Woodford.

It was a good looking bike. It was the right bike, but the wrong time. I only owned it for about a month. I got a really good deal on it. Couldn't pass it up. But I had to sell it pretty quickly because I was already deep in my 1959 sportster project. Once that one is done, I'll have to find another classic CB....

Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. It was a POW camp for Confederate soldiers, and all that remains of it is its cemetery. It resembles a miniature version of Arlington National Cemetery.
The tombstones have no birth or death dates, just names of the soldiers and what unit they served in.

Drove out to California to spend father’s day with my dad. I love having my morning coffee looking at the sun rise over the Antelope valley. We also went up San Francisco and Yosemite. I helped my dad work his land and I pulled a piece of glass that had been stuck in my forehead since I had a car accident in February of 2000. How is that for a summer road trip?

It's an app for your cell phone or tablet that allows you to interact with different online forums. I usually use the WKC app, but for the last month changes have been made that prevent you from uploading photos. You can get the tapatalk app and login to the WKC site and upload pictures through their app. That's how I understand it anyway. Others may have further details.

Switched to AT&T fiber to the home today. So far so good, 300mbps up and down. I’m a cable guy, but my company does not serve my area. Never thought I’d say it, but AT&T seems like a top notch company. Install process was friendly and flawless. I called yesterday to inquire and was installed 24 hours later at a lower price per month and am very impressed.

These photos were taken this week in An Nuys, California by Henser Villela. Pretty amazing burst mode photos of a Osprey in a dive for fish.

Even more amazing is the photo of this Osprey after the dive with two fish. One in the talons of each foot.

These birds are amazing to watch. I do a lot of fishing and for many years saw them diving for fish while bass fishing at assorted California lakes. They tuck their wings back and are traveling so fast, they appear to enter the water head first. It wasn't until I watched a documentary on Ospreys that showed one in slow motion during a dive. About 10 feet before entering the water, the bird brings it's feet and legs forward and enters the water feet first. They can dive 3 to 4 feet under water. Almost always the fish will be positioned with the head pointing forward in their talons. They always dive and attack the fish from the rear. This is because a fishes eyes are positioned such they can't see behind themselves.
Look at the intensity of those eyes.

My parents had the orange / silver one back in the 1970s when I was a child.
According to my Dad, it ended up in the scrap metal pile as it developed holes due to neglect, I guess.
They are not porcelain coated, either.
I have managed to have 2 in my possession in the last 4-5 years, however, both have been sold.
The orange/silver one that I had did not say "ball-b-q" on the lid, so I assume it was one of the early editions.
The one I got was in very rough condition, but it was worth rescuing... for $10.
It appeared that a previous owner had painted the lid silver. I managed to get the paint off revealing patchy gold paint.
I also used dowel to replace the wood handles.

My new hobby. 3D printing. Been tinkering with small prints for about 6 weeks making sure I’m getting good consistent results. Finally tried a long print and so far so good. This T800 pen holder will be about 28 hours start to finish.

Makers 101 so smooth for high alc bourbon which I am typically not a fan of, too easy to drink and a smooth finish and a decent price point. My wife is not a big bourbon drinker and it was also her favorite too.
