Looking for some advice from the community
« on: July 22, 2016, 07:08:45 PM »
Hey guys!  I currently own a 22" kettle and a Vortex. I have been squirreling away some money for some cooking goodies. Wanted to see what you guys thought. At the top of the list is a Sous Vide, a CL Performer or another 22 , WSM or make a mini WSM , or a nice digital thermo.  If you guys were in my boat with my current grill and accessories which of those do you think you would go for first?  Just having a hard time deciding lol. Thanks everyone

You might want to consider putting a slow n sear on that list. I've found or to be a great accessory.  Also like the ballistic griddle that craycort is selling. I have a post on that one.

What no Maverick ?
You have to get a Maverick before you move on, IMHO.

Maybe a 22 inch cajun bandit stacker?

But the slow n sear is a great starter for a kettle smoker.

I do have a 14 inch wsm, and I like it very much, but I could see the stacker eliminating the need.

I could see using the SnS for most smokes, and the stacker for the bulk smokes...done.

...but the wsm is soooo easy to temp control.... I don't know....don't listen to me.... I haven't gotten a stacker yet.

Thermometer. Period

The Thermopen is great, I've got the Mk4 and love it - but just get the thermo first. It can be a 25$ Javelin off
Amazon or whatever - but get a thermometer first.

I have a Javelin knock off right now as my instant but was thinking bout getting a thermo for using on long cooks.  Really would like a SnS sometime so I can support my fellow NCers lol.  Was thinking the Sous Vide since it seems a lot of people are using them these days but just all these choices lol.

1. Slow n sear - then you can wait on the WSM.
2. Sous vide - there is nothing else like this.
3. CL performer - Be ready when the right deal shows up on CL.

Need need need a way to monitor temps. All the gadgets in the world won't give you the results you want if you don't know when to pull the product off the cooker. Thermapens are expensive but are cheaper than a trip to hospital or possible lawsuits from giving your guests food poisoning. Maverick remote therm will have you choosing $200+ cuts of meat with no fear.

Get a maverick first. Then thermapen.
Just my opinion...

Is the Mavericks pretty much still kinda the standard even with all the new ones on the market?

Yep, it seems that the Maverick has the largest slice of the market.
Readily available
Reasonable price
Works

I would get the Maverick next.
Being able to constantly monitor cooker temp as well as internal meat temp is a paradigm shift if you are coming from analog therms and spot check therms.

I also use a Thermapen, but the Maverick is my watchdog during a long cook.

ThermoWorks thermaQ is a fancier model if you want some more features. The BBQ kits are around $200. But no remote display... They have a model you can use your phone as display via Bluetooth.
