Anyone NOT have the urge to cook on a daisy wheel?
« on: April 24, 2014, 01:22:10 PM »
Hi, I just recently got my first daisy wheel MBH. I cleaned it up and plan to cherish it but I don't really have an urge to fire it up. Cleaning the bowl and using three vents doesn't quite appeal to me. Does this make me a bad Grillfella? Anyone else feel this way? If it were a 26'r I may reconsider. :)

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. Be kind.  8)

They scare me. I don't understand them.

What. No, they're great to cook on. You simply have more control of where the intake/airflow comes in. I wish my Performer Platinum had the daisy wheels. Except it's not as easy to empty the ashes later. On the Performer I'd hate to tip the whole table over to empty it!

I'm excited about getting a Smokey Mountain and having the 3 vents as well.

I use my WSM's more but I really only use one vent for temp control. I have the WSM in the corner so I the two vents along the wall are cracked just a bit and the one in front is usually at 50% or so. I don't mind the vents for the WSM as it's more "set and forget" but it still is kinda of a pain to clean. The ranch also has 3 daisy vents but I'll argue they are a little small for a cooker of that size.

I have no desire, I have owned a few daisy wheel and prefer the OT system 10x's over.
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

Bad gummi

Kidding

I'm with you

For me, they're usually all open or all closed.

If you have a thermometer, you can tell if it's too hot and start closing them down.

But it's a three wheeler, you don't need a stinking thermometer - you cook by touch. Just like in the olden days.

OT is easier, and the food is just as good.
Dude, relax your chicken.

Daisy Wheels are all I cook on.
The two I use all the time are pretty beat up (but still solid) mid 70s greys. I have 3 BEAUTIFUL daisy wheelers that I just haven't been able to talk myself into using.
It's a hell of a conundrum I tell ya.
I've got Webers. 10 - WSMs, 5 - 22.5" kettles, 2 - 18.5" kettle, 2 - SJS, 2 - SJP, 4 - WGA, 1 vintage Coolie Pan

I should have clarified that I have cooked on daisies in the past, but nothing too serious and I wasn't planning on keeping those kettles permanently. This MBH is the first one I plan to keep. So I have tried it before I deciding its not for me. I'm always willing to try things at least once!

I like to cook on the daisy wheels grills.   I like the extra control as with the WSMs.  They are nice for smoking low and slow when I don't want to use the WSM.  I will agree with you that I hate when its time to clean them out though!

I love my black daisy wheel for doing pizza. It also works good for banking the coals and running the rotisserie.
Looking for--- a yellow mbh any size, sequoia ( I know I am dreaming), avocado any size, brownie any size.

All this talk of daisy wheels has motivated me to kick the old girl over

And through on some beef ribs

I'm only 2 or 3 kettles away from being that creepy guy down the street with all the Webers
