I was challenged...
« on: June 05, 2013, 05:59:28 PM »
I few weeks ago pbe gummie posted a "b" 18" lid and a rolled ash catcher. I needed a rolled ash catcher for my 18" BBQ Kettle. Though it isn't period correct I made the purchase. He said the 18" "B" lid was in great condition, but the tray not so good. He PM'd me some pictures, I said no problem " I can clean that up".

This is what he didn't think would clean up.

So I was cooking and did a little clean-up....Didn't come out to bad?

While I waiting for dinner to get done and Zav wanted some picture of my recent purchase, Took a few while I was waiting. Walnut yet to be installed.

LBoldtz, here is the combo, but I have to refine it do to some waste...

1) CLR,  I am going to start using this in a spray bottle. This is the first application.
Going forward, spray with this, scrub with SOS pad and repeat...

2) Rinse and use the Mag Cleaner(Tray must be lightly wet). Let stand for 30 seconds, lightly scrub with SOS pad.

3) Repeat #1 if not to your liking.

4) Mothers using 0000 as the applicator.

5) Buff, before Mothers is dry. This, is ongoing, as it comes up black for a while, then it will shine.

6) This is a work in progress, at figuring this out, so if you can add, please do. But this is what is working for me so far.

Sorry,  CLR. It is a chemical available at HD or Loses. Removes lime,  calcium and rust.,  Mothers Mag wheel Polish,  0000 as applicater.

Yeah but depending on how you tilt the container as it comes out determines which part, the lime, rust or calcium gets cleaned first.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

Yes,  that's the stuff, thanks for correcting me. I am going to use it in a spray bottle going forward. I will use less and can control if better. Light sprays,  couple applications.

Well,  the whole process makes them shine. CLR and SOS scrub gets rid of the build up if crud. The next step is the Mag Aluminum cleaner,  let set for 30 seconds,  lightly scrub again with SOS pad. Finish with 0000 and Mothers, polish...

That's amazing, Greg. Thanks for sharing your secrets. I didn't say it couldn't be done. I said I didn't want to do it!  :D That may change now though for the aluminum parts.  ;)

That looks fantastik Greg.  my new avacado has the older thinner twist pan that needs to be cleaned as well.  I am a little concerned that scrubbing it is going to mis-shape it even more.  I will definitely add CLR to my treatment plan.
