Very simple Weber Mod seen in Estate Sale Pic
« on: December 02, 2017, 07:30:29 PM »
It just made me laugh as they didn't seem to understand that they really only have parts to two different grills

But, it is about the easiest mod to make a full size shorty.

Lol believe it or not it's something I want to try with a kettle with my mini wsm with and without the tamale pot. I've already tried it with a jumbo joe on my mini and it works great. The kettle has a bigger dome and with the smokey joe base it can smoke a lot longer, easier to refuel, and the heat stays in the kettle. It's rigged up but works and the best part the kettle can still be used as a kettle.

There is a real mod for this:

With the bottom cut out, that's more of a stacker.

I'm under the impression with these here, that because the bottom is left intact, it creates a natural heat deflector, which also mitigates the issue of having to fab a plate or something for the lower section.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

I think you would always want to cut the bottom out that way you could use a deflector or not

That is a pretty interesting thread.  Now, I'm thinking maybe I should make one with a couple cheap blacks & then turn around and sell my 18" Smokey Mountain & use the cash for interesting finds.

Yep Larry beer can Fischer. I picked it up from user swamprb. Seems it's spreading just saw this beast in a Weber smokey mountain page on Facebook.

Potsieweber you should add a 22.5 kettle to your 18.5 like this setup. It's a wsm 22.5 with a 26 kettle.

What does this mod actually buy you? Efficiency? Extra capacity? Not knocking it, I just don’t understand it. Wouldn’t the bottom of the kettle get all gunked up?

I cut the bottom out of mine and put oven gasket around the edge to seal it up. For me it was mainly about capacity as I'm sure it is for most. I wouldn't go out buying a new kettle or one that's in great shape. I only have 60 or 70$ in my little setup from shopping around on Craigslist  The best part is you can still use it as a regular kettle just have to adjust dampers differently.

How can you use it as a "regular kettle" if you've cut the bottom out of it?

The charcoal grate is still there on mine but I have a jumbo joe. With the kettle you would have to cut it below charcoal grate straps (not sure what they're called) then just put the charcoal on the grate accordingly. Then adjust the vents on the bottom of whatever you're using for a base.
