If when using a meat probe thermometer like for instance the "Smoke", with a kettle, do you just insert the wires between the bowl and lid? That seems to create a good size air leak.

Yes Joe-it's the only way at present to do it. If you've got a smoke-did you source it in the Uk?

No I don't have one yet. I'm doing my research to see if I really want one or not. And to see if this is the best unit for the money.

You can route wires through the bottom vents as well. You won't be able to shut the cooker down completely, but it works just fine for low n slow cooks. Or, if it's a cooker, not a looker kettle, you can drill a hole in the side and make a port. Idea came from @weldboy

I like the idea of drilling a hole but would rather not drill into my new kettle. LOL

I love my Maverick. Great tool to have. I run the wires under the lid without issue.

I use a Chef Alarm and run the cable under the lid of kettles and WSMs without a problem. If Smoke was available at the time, I would have bought one. I'll probably get one eventually.

run through the vent if you don't want to create leaks or ruin your probe wires.

I have ruined probe wires....for 2 units. I used to cook quite a bit.

So you basically have a couple of options.  Run the wires under the lid, or don't run the wires under the lid. I personally have had no problems. It looks like others have had issues. All you can do is try it and see what happens.

I think being careful when putting the lid on the wires is all that's necessary. It's like hanging the lid on the hook. Just be careful with it.
