I got it!
« on: October 18, 2016, 08:48:25 AM »
As some of you may know, a friend of mine found this at an estate sale up in Door County.  He was going to put it up for bid on Ebay to get as much as he could for it. After some thought he decided to sell it to me (at a very good price) knowing I really wanted it for my collection.

Is there a way to pin point what year it is? After looking through some old catalogs I’m guessing anywhere from 1965 to 1971.

That's a beauty!  Congrats.

I'm not an expert on the offset handled SJs, but looks like mid-late 60s to me.

Glad you finally got it.  Now I feel bad that I called him a jerk for not selling it to you.  Congrats!

Congratulations!

My guess on year is early to mid 60's.  The very first SJs had a metal handle and tripod legs.  In the sixties, the wood handle appeared and the tripod legs went away.  Exact dates for early SJ's are difficult to assess - I had to rely on newspaper advertisements/dates to see changes in the SJ model.  See here for more:

I've been really interested in SJ history lately so I just took a look at the old catalogs.  Here is what I see:
'64 - Shows top vent with metal handle over it and peg legs.
'66 - Lists "improved damper control" and picture shows wooden handle facing away from vent.  Image shows peg legs. Only color listed is Jet Black.
'68 - Same handle/legs as '66, no color listed. Image may be speckled, but it's hard to tell.
'71 - Same handle/legs as '66 & '68, kettle appears speckled.
'72 - Shows speckled, red and green finishes. Legs changed to connected tri-wire leg set.

So my refined guess is it somewhere in the '68-'71 timeframe.  Thoughts @Winz ?

I don't see a catalog for '65 so I'm thinking the wood handle and speckled could have been that year? '66 looks just like mine, maybe they did offer a speckled but did not list it in the catalog? No catalog for 67, could it be a '67?

Neil - this is great information that I would like to incorporate in the SJ history article.  I need to review these articles and incorporate the pictures.

I am surprised that the straight legs were still in place in 71.  I was sure the switchover to the connected style happened in the late 60's

@JDD congrats! That is a beautiful sj. I don't own any, but I would like to have one of those some day for a looker.
@Neil_VT00 Thankyou for the history breakdown. That is very cool. I hadn't seen a peg leg version yet, that I'm aware of. Your explanation explains it.
What a cool sj.
