Looking for a dry rub recipe that doesn't have sugar
« on: January 04, 2015, 05:18:16 PM »
The wife and I are doing something called "whole30" and that means no sugar for 30 days among other things. This weekend I'm smoking another pork butt for pulled pork. Most rubs that I've seen contain either sugar or brown sugar. Can anyone here recommend a recipe for a rub that doesn't have sugar?

You could always pull the brown sugar from the rub and replace it with agave nectar. If you do this I would recommend cooking until you hit the stall then wrapping in foil with the agave nectar. Check out Harry Soo's Pulled Pork Method as well for ideas.

Lots of rub recipes in the following link:

Take your pick.  Remove the sugar from the ones you like.

A: When you are not allowed to question it.

Thanks folks. Was hoping someone had a rub recipe that they have already tried before branching out and using the google. :)

@pbe gummi bear, no sweeteners are allowed for this Whole30 thing so the agave nectar is a no go.

I had dinner at a Sticky Fingers in Jacksonville and really liked the dry rub.   When I looked it up, this is what I found.  I always keep some ready now.

1 Tbs. paprika
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. black pepper
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp garlic powder
