Brian has once again extended the invite to his house for the Chicago meetup of 2016.

This is a rare opportunity to get to see some of the core members of this group and see some of the most treasured kettles in the midwest.

We have had members from other countries drive over 8 hours to attend this event, if you have not had the chance to attend I highly encourage it.

The event will take place on Aug 6th.  More details to follow in this thread as they become available.

I was wondering if there was gonna be a get together this year. Last years was awesome and Brian was a more than fantastic host. It will be great to see everyone this year and the FANTASTIC Webers everyone brings along. Oh yea...one more thing, the food was out of this world.

Looks like I'm on the every other year pace - I can't make the 6th unless a miracle happens. These meetups get better and better every year, and it hurts to miss one!

I'll provide, pop, water, coolers and of course plenty of grills to cook on.  I'll have some Kingsford around but if you like special charcoal bring it along.  Last year most people brought something to grill, but it's not necessary.  If you can make it please come, your not obligated to cook anything.  If you have grills you want to bring and show off please bring them.  If you have stuff to trade...that is always on the table too.  I'm sure I have some stuff that will be in the trading or selling block......

Initially, I am saying no but the wife was tossing out some ideas where I could justify making the trip.

We'll see.

For those sitting the fence, my wife and I made the trip last year and for me it was the highly of 2015.  To be able to mingle and with other like minded kettle heads it was such a pleasure.

@LightningBoldtz I know in the past I may have said I would use your Lions grill as a commode, but if you show up, I'll even let you display that grill and vow that no harm will come to it, at least from Bears fans, can't speak for the Packer faithful.....

Oh I'll be there this year! Unless my wife gives birth to our third child before then. Then in that case I'll be coming with in infant!

Perhaps I'll have a grill to bring along...

Looks like I may be able to make the 4-5 hour drive for this year's meet up... looking forward to it!

You should check hotels in St Charles on or around North Ave (Rt 64)...they are close and most seem pretty nice.....

I am a maybe (job time off permitting) I asked for it off and got the wife's seal of approval.

I am plotting and scheming to see if I can somehow make it.

Well it looks like the plotting and scheming is going to work, I went from 10% showing to very likely 90%.

I will be bringing my 12 and 9 yr old boys with me.  We will be heading out in the morning on Saturday and staying somewhere that evening and coming back home on Sunday.

Family will always be there, there is only 1 annual Chicago WKC meetup, per year.   Haha, just kidding, totally understand.

I know, I am super bummed.

So just to reiterate, I'm going to provide Pop and Water, I'll have ice and Kingsford on hand, as well as a few coolers.  I'll have grills to grill on.  If you want something special to drink, or special charcoal you will have to bring that.  It would be nice to have a list of people who plan to show up and weather or not they are going to cook something.  It's always nice to show off some of your cooking handy work, but not necessary.  I myself will prob not cook anything as I'll be to busy to have any time to throw anything together.....unless no one is gonna cook then I'll be forced to cook some hotdogs or something........Lets plan on noon but if your a little later no prob.....Ernie usually shows up in the afternoon :^)  As always old grills are welcome....

I will be making the voyage out from NY. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone. I don't think I will be cooking anything unless I can figure out a way to bring it with me in a cooler on the train. I will, however, be bringing Apple Smoked Gouda Cheese from my family's dairy.

I can't wait to see the 18.5 red Wood Dale that Brian restored. The last time I saw it, it was just a box full of rusty parts.

OK,  So here is what I am coming to CHI with:

- Master-Touch Lions grill and smokey Joe a maybe.

Debating on food, I might keep it simple and just do smoked brats

3 - ashpans that will be sold to members at the event

I will have Weber's big book of burgers for sale to members at the event for $10.  Books are brand new and excellent reads.

We will be doing a drawing for those members who attend prizes offered up will be:

-stainless steel wok for a 22 never used

-Weber bear claws for pulling meat and removing meat from the grill

We have other members @Bob BQ and @Shoestringshop Dan who have also decided to contribute some of their own loot to the event.

Goods for the event will be distributed in a controlled manner, please do not assume goods are freebies until they are offered.   :D

Thanks I look forward to meeting those who I have not met and seeing those who I have met again.

Don't forget to take a group shot of everyone there, spouses, kids, everyone. With all the rain and heat, we totally missed that last year. The one we took the first year at Jeff's was great. Remember, the WKC is people first. The rest is just old grills.

Will anyone who will be there have WKC stickers for sale (I'm looking in your direction, Statesmen)?

I think I can bring some stickers, I have a limited amount and no they will not be for sale.  The only thing I will be selling are the ash pans (which are accounted for) and my Weber burger books, purchasing these book does help the cause of the WKC.

So one other item for give away will be a Premium Tee American Flag tee shirt.  It is a 2xl but fits like an xl.  They replaced it with another shirt so this is extra.

I'll be bringing plates. Brian says he has plastic wear, but extra can't hurt?  Anyone that can bring a bag if ice or 2 would be great.  Any sides might be an option...I'm bring cold pasta salad, I didn't see too many other sides.  Chips?? @zavod44 ??

Got it. We're bringing what's essentially a side, but with some grilled chicken on it. I might bring a few growlers of some local brew. Ice is easy enough.

Ginos East is the best!  The others mentioned are a close third and 2nd place is the rosatis by my house!  Their awesome!

I think Lou Malnatis is good but a lot of the locations are carry out only.  My personal favorite is Uno or Due but you can only go to them downtown, anywhere else is crap.  That's why I suggested Genos or Giordanos because they are decent and you can eat in there....

I couldn't agree more. Yesterday's meet-up was epic, I had a blast talking and spending time with everyone. I seriously believe that @Craig knows more about the history of Weber grills than anyone that even works at Weber. I got an awesome history lesson from him yesterday.

When I decided that I would attend the meet-up, my wife said "so... You are going to travel half way across the country to a stranger's house... To hang out with people you have never met before? And that doesn't seem strange to you???"  My response was: "Not at all!!"  8)

I felt more at home with this group of people than I do at many get-togethers with my own family. This is a great hobby and a great club and it is the people that make it great.

Thank you to everyone for a great time and especially to Brian for hosting. I was even able to pickup a grill while I was there. Thank you @bladz  I was able to get it loaded on the train and it is traveling back to NY with me now.

WOW...what a great day yesterday turned out to be. Brians' a FABULOUS host and everyone else who showed up thanks to all of you too. You made the Chicago 2016 meet-up one that won't soon be forgotten. AWESOME food was enjoyed throughout the day. The grills, what can I say, basically surrounded the backyard and looked BEAUTIFUL, both cookers AND lookers. Safe travels home to all that made the trek to Chicagoland.

First and foremost, it was an an incredible day, the weather was perfect.  A huge thank you to everyone who made the journey to show up.  There was people from all over, and it was very humbling that so many people were willing to make the effort to come to my house....I had a brief thought about 11:30 in my mind I thought what if no one shows up?  Then five min later Dan from NY came through the door and the day was off to the races....

I can't thank everyone enough.  From the guys who lived right down the street to those who came from far and wide.  Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, New york.  If I forgot a state please chime in and remind me.  Thank you so much for making it a great time, and help making this a bigger event than last year.  It's nice to see it grow.... It's the people who make it a great time.  I met new people and old friends.  The food and the company was second to none.......

Looks like a great time! Bummer that I missed all the fun. Hopefully we can make it to the next one

I need to put a separate post to thank @brewtownbeatdown .  A lot of people brought me a gift for hosting, and it wasn't at all necessary.  But I need to acknowledge something that was given to me.  Mike AKA Brewtown had a custom grate made form me and it's fucking awesome.  I can't thank him enough.  It's was really nice that he took the time to make such a nice gift.  It took a lot of thought and effort to make this.  And I vow what I'm gonna cook the shit out of this thing.  I can't wait to fire it up!

I have to say thanks too Brian, even though I wasn't there. Pulling these things together in between a day job and family is no small task. I did catch the Facebook live posts - very cool. Can't believe the weather you had - looks perfect. Can you imagine if Google maps did a satellite view of this scene? Did anyone do a kettle count? Might be a new world's record!

@56MPG  I counted 84 grills I counted!

A wonderful time was had by all. I would like to thank Brain and his family for sponsoring this event. @Craig  -  So about the lid.....It looks like there was some sort of logo on it at some point that caused that area to not fade as much as the rest of the lid.  Appears to be a cupcake, mushroom, or chefs hat, or at least that is what I make of it.  Interested to see if the darker spot is what you are hinting at and what the story is behind it.

Seriously though, I'm getting excited for this sequoia. I'm not sure how full of a restoration I'll do, but I was able to pick up a nice piece of redwood board on the cheap a few days ago to replace that missing door panel. Lots of good threads on here have given me inspiration.

This one has the large radius type vs. the more typical tight radius we see today.  Was a conclusion arrived at that anchors one or the other to a particular year(s)? Also wondering about the strap handles on the bowl vs. the molded lid handle. When did that transition occur?

This type of triangle I would put back towards 1960-61. I saw this beauty in person but I can't make out from this picture if the bowl handle straps are the early straight cut welds or the curved welds. We know red and the familiar black and white steel wheels existed for sure in 1962 however they did NOT YET in 1958. There's been some 22 Wood Dales out there with that same triangle.

Upon further review (pulling up my own camera roll) This Woody Easterner has the later rounded bowl strap handles...

For some reason I didn't snap a pic of the other red 18 Wood Dale that Brian has that used to belong to the family of Dan NY. Brian or anyone have any closeups of that one? Bowl handle shape? I can't believe I didn't snap a shot of that one I'm so mad at myself right now...

For some reason I didn't snap a pic of the other red 18 Wood Dale that Brian has that used to belong to the family of Dan NY. Brian or anyone have any closeups of that one? Bowl handle shape? I can't believe I didn't snap a shot of that one I'm so mad at myself right now...

Thanks for posting that Dan. Yes that one is slightly older then with the squares off bowl straps.

I remember that one too - from last year's meetup. @Craig did 18.5s ever use the same metal handle as the lids from this era? I'm thinking not, but somewhere in the dark recesses of my mind I recall they did. Probably just a dream...

Which is older, the square ends or the rounded ends? I always assumed that the square ends were older, but it sounds like I had it backwards? Thanks

Square ended MBH 18s are older.
