Rack of pork wsm and big block coal
« on: December 18, 2019, 02:16:57 PM »
First time using kamado big block lump. Smelled amazing when lighting and I’m impressed with the quality and size of the chunks.

Also first time making a rack of pork.

This is a live cook so I’ll update in about an hour.

I also really like the Kamado Joe XL Big Block lump.  I stock up when the KJ special event comes to my local Costco.

That’s where I got it. It was $21 for 30lbs. Is that the normal price or is that a deal?

That’s the same price I paid.  I did the math before I stocked up and it was a good deal for excellent lump.  Unfortunately it’s not stocked all the time, so I keep my eye on the Special Events section of the Costco site.

I almost never use my smoke but this seemed appropriate.

@HoosierKettle what is your take on the big block? I really enjoyed the bag I got and it's time for more !!
Seeking a Black Sequoia I know I know, I'd settle for just the tabbed no leg grill

So far I’m very happy with the big block.  It lights fast and smells great starting up. I opened and poured from the bottom of the bag and there wasn’t a lot of shake and small pieces like other lump. I also didn’t see any foreign material or unburned pieces.

I used a single grease soaked paper towel in the middle to light and it took right off.  I didn’t use a chimney. This is pretty typical for most lumps to light fast though.

This is what was left this morning after last nights 2 hour cook at 300 in 20 degree weather. Looks like I burned a third of what I started with which I think is pretty good.

I hate it when my bag has a bunch of shake in it.

Oh wait you were talking about coal still!
