... Mom in law said to my wife "remember that grill you talked me into buying at an auction a few years ago? ...

Danger! Danger! Red Flag!

Can a spouse who has firsthand knowledge of such an artifact but keeps it from her spouse --- for years! --- be trusted?

Proceed with caution.

But did the mother in law let you keep it?

Might be worth contacting Weber and seeing if anyone there can say how it's made.

Because if it's actually porcelain enameled paint, cook on it!

I sent an email w pics to Weber. Haven't heard back yet. I'll let y'all know what they say if I do.

I finally got a response from Weber re: my inquiry on this grill.  This is all they said: "In regards to the grill your mother-in-law purchased, that was a business to business venture we engaged in. Beyond that, there is not much relevant information available."

So.... hard to tell if there are many more floating around.

I would be surprised if it was -not- porcelain.

It's porcelain.... it's meant to cook.

I responded back to Weber one more time and asked if they could share any further details about the rarity (or not) of these replicas. He responded:

"...I'm afraid we don't release the production numbers of any of our products, but I'd consider this grill to be rare, although it's certainly not the only one out there.  Your mother-in-law's is the first I've ever seen a photo of in all the years I've worked here."

So there are at least a few more floating around in the wild.
