Effect of wind on at OTS?
« on: February 12, 2015, 04:37:24 PM »
How much of an effect will wind have on a OTS? I just finished a less-than-stellar cook - it took much longer than normal - and I can't help but think its because there was a steady 15-20 mph wind (paired with temp in the low 30s).

Or do I just sound like I'm making excuses for myself?  :-[

I've smoked when it was 7 degrees and windy and you'll use a ton more fuel also.

Weather has a huge effect, not only cold and wind but also direct sun. In the last couple of years I have started using a pop up canopy when smoking on my stick burner in the summer months. For me steady low temps are much easier to achieve in the shade. I have started cooks early in the morning only to have the temps become high and barely controllable as the sun rises in the sky. I would guess the same holds true for kettle cooking.
