How to bake potatoe fast
« on: May 15, 2018, 04:13:08 PM »
I've never done a baked potatoe on the grill and would love to tonight. What temp and how long do you do them? Indirect or direct? Wrapped in foil or not?

I'd like to do it fast tonight if possible, maybe cut in half?

Any advice?

Maybe half bake them in the microwave before tossing them on the grill.

So say 5 minutes in the microwave, then what should I do? Wrapped or not? Indirect I'm assuming?

Sorry so slow responding was eating dinner.
5 minutes in the nuker, then maybe 30 indirect unwrapped. I never wrap potatoes I prefer crispy skin.

... but, for speed, wrap in foil. Don’t do it direct unless you plan on turning them often.

ProTip: Put them in the basement. They’ll cook just as well as on the cook grate, and you’ll have full use of the cook grate.

P.S. Start a little earlier :(

Weber makes potato nails, which help speed up the process.

I like to slice them in 1/4” slices, drizzle some oil and S&P, then, keeping the slices in order, wrap them in foil and cook indirect for about 30 minutes. They’re my favorite!

(Focus on the taters in the pics, not the steak lol)

Great tip!  I always forget about the basement.

Would it be possible to cook ribs in a rack in the basement?  Or other items you want to bake /smoke?

I love it but if I go to the trouble of slicing them it would be very tempting to fry them in the cast iron [emoji3]

Thanks for the feedback guys. I ended up cutting a big potatoe in half then nuking it for 6 minutes. Put olive oil on both sides with kosher salt, cracked pepper and garlic powder the put them on indirect size skin down no foil the entire time the chicken breast were on. They turned out phenomenal!

I wasn’t supposed to get a follow up question. Now you’re asking me to speculate. Which is, that because potatoes are dense, they can take being closer to coals. On the other hand, maybe it’s hotter up on the cook grate. OR that the foil evens out the cooking in addition to amplifying it some. Corn on the cob probably works this way. Ribs, eh, don’t know about that.
