The 'Time Machine' - Black MBH
« on: December 20, 2013, 02:53:38 AM »
A couple of weekends ago, I met up with forum member Jeff who was willing to haul one of my kettles to it's new owner.  What should have been an hour-long commute, ended up taking us almost twice that long due to slippery snow-covered roads.  Before heading home, we did a quick check of the local CL ads and found this for a song.  The owner wasn't able to meet us as we were passing through, he was just on his way out to church, but was willing to let us leave a few dollars in his front screen-door when we picked up the grill from his front porch.

The kettle was dirty and needed to be cleaned up, but is in excellent condition.  I don't know the history on this grill, but it must be a low-hour unit, and I sense that the pervious owner was a grill fella who took care of his stuff.

Most of the MBH's I see around here have cracked porcelain and rust around the bowl handles.  Not this one...

An example of this kettle's condition, here is a pic of the original wood handle.  I refinished it with 5 coats of satin spar varnish, but it's in amazing condition for it's age!  Also no rust where the metal lid handle is welded to the lid.

Really nice kettle, Art.  I love what you've doe with the handle.

Part of the lack of excitement for black kettles, I think, is seeing them so often with plastic handles, which cheapens the look.  The original wood handles, or Zav replacements really make these kettles stand out.
