The "Fruity"** colors are an interesting segment of the kettle population.....

** Term coined by Golly, as far as I know...... 8)

We all know and love the "Cherries" ~~>

Even if the birds have been peckin' at 'em.....

And of course there's the "Lemons & Limes ~~~>

And who could forget " Blueberries" ?

And, yep, some folks do call them "Coconuts....pretty sure that's a fruit type, or maybe Im wrong ?

And then there's "Avacado" which, although most people treat it as a vegetable, is actually a fruit ~~~>

Did I miss anything?

Hhhmmmmmmm.........................YEP !!!

Welp.......

Picked me up a "Home Depot" Orange, in reasonable condition ( NO silly logo )

Got it spiffed up a bit.....still needs a replacement ash sweep........ 8)

I have never seen anything like that one - I love it! It's a Halloween kettle! Does it turn darker orange under fire?

Is the Home Depot orange actual orange porcelain or was it painted?
kettles, smokers...

Just when you think you have seen it all then this comes around, very nice so what's the story behind the orange?

Nice work Buckie! You have increased the value of that kettle by 10 fold. :)

They didn't.......until now !!!!

Things I MAY have succeded in accomplishing with this "mod"........

1) Alienating Marty permanently, 'cause it started out life as a regular black kettle.....
2) Figuring out how Golly can be "Feelin' Fruity" all the time....
3) Detirmining what anyone can do if they'd like a color kettle (within reason & high heat color availabliity / constraints)......
4) Expanding the fruit color horizon.....by one.........
5) Detirmining what might work in re: to the high heat colors.......

Here's where it started ~~~>

A standard black OTS, "L" code..........

Cleaned up & slightly roughed surface, to accept paint better.....coated with high heat primer, one repeated very thick coating.......

Then several coats of high heat Orange...............then, two multi-stage charcoal burn heat sets, after allowing it to sit in 102 ~109 degree heat for approx. 10 days.........

Then a fairly thick coating of high heat clear & TWO more heat setting burns.......

I got a little overly zealous on the clear in some spots & it's a bit thick & needs a few more burn cycles to completely fill out the drying......it's a demonstration of how dusty & also how much aireal
livestock is floating around where I live......

The still tacky clear was picking up small gnats & various lite spatter from the pecan trees up above & also dust that's generally always in the air from the busy street out front......

It's effectively been cooked on several times.....just not my "signature greasy bacon, cram the kettle full" kinda cookup....just yet..... 8)

Oh, and yes it does turn a bit darker under heat....the 1st few runs it almoost looked brown, but changes less the more times it gets heat set.....

You get a pass from me on this one Buckie, but next time I'm gonna have to charge you. If convicted, you will be sentenced to using gas for a year.

I DONT BELIEVE YOU!

Seriously though, if that thing has been heated to cooking temp and still looks like that, I am impressed.

The ceramic high heat paint has to be heated to set up in stages.....I used my new charcoal baskets to great effect for this......keeps the burn contained where you want it, in my case, I wanted it spread just slightly from center so it wouldn't overheat the sides of the bowl too quickly.....

I believe I need to set them up on an old cooking grate, at least once, to get a better set up on the lid.......

The paint instructions are to move up to one heat level, cool down, move up to a higher heat level, cool down & move to very high heat, but hopefully not near the upper limit of the coating which is 1600~2000 F..............
I did a sort of modified (isn't everything "sort of modified" nowdays?) version of the suggested method by starting out with some unlit in the baskets......adding some lit, waiting.....adding some more lit & building the heat up & watching how the paint seemed to act in response.....
