Family vacation ideas
« on: March 20, 2022, 09:02:43 AM »
We are going on a week long vacation in June. It’s about a 14hr drive. There will be 6 adults and 5 kids total. The beach house we are renting has a....gas grill... I’m trying to figure out a way to take a kettle but with 3 young kids and all of the things that we need to bring for them, I’m not sure how that can happen. I’m considering an 18” smoky joe but I have doubts that will be big enough for the entire crew. Any suggestions?

Get an A-maze-N smoke tube and some pellets or sawdust for use with the gas grill.  Don't forget something to start the tube with.  Starter jell or a propane torch.

Take a grill, kids are resilient and really don’t need much.

I tried one of the A-maze-N smoke tubes and am highly disappointed in it. It’s been used once in almost a year

Grab a used one from craigslist Facebook marketplace close to the beach house and leave it there. You might get lucky and find a free one.

That’s a good idea. I was even thinking about buying a new 1 once we get down there and then we have to make it fit for the way home!

The kettles come apart, to fit better, and probably sacrilege, but one of the best tritip I ever did was on one of those cheap square grill things set up as close as I could get indirect on it.

Pack your own grate.

Check and see if there’s an Ace Hardware in the area.  Buy an 18” Weber when you get there and leave it for the next guest.  I did that a couple of times before I got my Yukon.  Now I take Marilyn with us every year. : ). Also brought a jumbo Joe last October.

I don’t think an 18” is big enough, unless you cook in shifts, kids/adults, and still that’s pushing it. Either use the provided gas grill, or pick up a $50 Walmart special, like the blue one bbqking showed above.

Happiness is found under the lid of a charcoal grill.

I like flashokie's idea.
Craigslist kettle and leave it for the next visitor.
