This guy did an entire write up on charcoal amounts mainly using Kingsford Blue with vent control to maintain temperatures.
It is pretty interesting.

Interesting IMO it's unnecessary to control the top vent, I prefer the top wide open to keep the smoke flowing out. Would have been nice if the snake method was mentioned as well as gaskets as some kettles are leakier than others.

I keep bottom open almost all the time, and control temp with the top vent. Most of the time I keep vent above food being cooked, both direct and indirect. When I’m done cooking, I close all vents and coals slowly go out, leaving leftover partially burned coals to use on next cook. Not saying that’s the only way to do it, but it works for me.
