Vent Photo Poster
« on: April 07, 2013, 06:43:44 AM »
Starting a new thread to keep this project alive. I hope to have this done by the June meetup, but I'll have my camera with me and will be taking plenty of shots in case something unusual shows up. (Vents, not people...)

Here are a few shots I've taken to show you what I need. Pretty easy process:

Use the macro seting on your camera if you have it. Sharp focus is key!
Use the large size photo setting.
Take the photo directly over the vent - no angled shots.
Leave some room around the vent to crop it into a square and still have a little space around the vent.
I am shooting for a .jpg at 300dpi - approximately 1200 pixels X 1200 pixels. I can use what you have as long as it has a high enough resolution.
Send me a couple shots if you can, and I'll pick the best one.
Use this email address to send your files: mgierke at mac dot com

Thanks, and have fun!

This one is cropped a little tight, shoot for something like the first two if you can.

Great idea Marty. Once we have some warm weather and I can find some Simi, I will send a few in.
Hoping the Arlington vent with the "D" will shine up.

Don't get too hung up on how clean it is. I happen to like evidence of use - or "beausage". (Beauty through usage) Here's a great example:

Looks just like the one on my yellow, but missing the 'D".

MartyG,
Is this project still alive?  Are you trying to complete the "alphabet"?  What letter codes do you still need?  I think this is an awesome project...  Thanks!

Any particular webers that interest you? Kettles? Smokers? New? Old? Mine go from '74 through '13.

Hows this one? I can do more vents and/or reshoot this one later.

Not bad, but need a little more room on all sides of the vent to work with. In real size terms, maybe an inch around all sides would be good. Focus is OK, but could be sharper. Lighting is great. BTW, don't think I've seen a vent with that writing on it. Cool.

BTW, the project is still alive. Brian sent me a bunch, and I'll be able to work on it next weekend. I need to sort out what codes I have, and which ones are good enough to use. I'll provide a more detailed list next week. The mockup I did is amazing, and will only get better. Don't forget to email your photos to me in hi res! The ones posted on the site are rarely suited for printing.

Thanks all for the interest in this. Can't wait myself!

I just shot a bunch of mine with various lighting and exposure settings.

IMO one of the better ones.

Take a look at the album and let me know if you like any and if so, what post processing you would like me to perform (cropping, cleaning up the background...) and I'll do that and email you the full resolution images. These are all resized to 1024 pixels.

If you want any reshot with different lighting (or other settings), let me know what you want and I'll try to accomplish it.

(Oh, yeah... Add rotation to straighten out as necessary.  ;) )

thanks,
hank
