To each their own.  I love my faded black MBH. Lots of character. I cover my performer that I bought new its not to say it won't ever get wet or have a little rust. If you want a pristine kettle then buy one new and never use it. I like nice things but these are grills, utilities, and they are tough enough to last 30+ years and still cook on. A tremendous value when buying a Weber kettle.

I'm a believer in using a cover.  To me the faded black kettles are evidence of sun damage but I have no proof of that. 

I have an old redhead that has been outside, uncovered for years.  It now has a cracking in the finish (see below).  It could be related to high-heat cooks before I got the kettle, the bowl has some crazing, but I don't recall the kettle ever having that issue when I first got it.
