I am going on vacation soon and the town I am visiting has a weber on Craigslist I have really been wanting. However, I would have to fly back with it. Has anyone ever checked a a 22" weber grill as one of your pieces of luggage?  If so, any tips?

You could always buy it and ship it before your vacation is over.  That way you'll know that it was packaged well.  It might be easier than paying for and checking it as luggage.

Are you paying for the check-in fees? If so, it might be better to ship it via regular shipping co. With air cargo it's guaranteed to be dropped multiple times even though the trip duration is shorter. I have flown with large weber parts but I would try not to fly with anything delicate.

Oh actually I have flown with a Performer Bowl. It was in the original Replacement bowl packaging from Weber with roughly 2" of additional space in each direction. I padded the hell out of it with moving blankets and it came out fine from SFO-ORD.

I am going to try this at Thanksgiving with a brownie kettle my parents have sitting in STL.  @tb80 let me know how it goes for you!

Why would you want to dick with dragging an assembled grill through an airport? Ship that sucker!

Because if you have status you can fly with 1 or 2 grills checked in within the CONUS for FREE. Coast to coast shipping a kettle with personal accounts to residential addresses are in the $50-$60 range and are slower.

I just flew back from Amsterdam with a new in the box "Spring Green" Master Touch, it cost about $30 for the extra size. It arrived in perfect shape. You could dis-assemble it and pack it up in a Weber box.

I think we would all like to see a picture of your new grill

I have checked in a smokey joe gold (on 2 seperate occasions) on a flight from Edinburgh/London to Sydney and a 22" roti ring kit on a flight from Houston to Sydney.

All made it unscathed. :)
