Radiant Heat Barrier
« on: July 31, 2015, 07:36:44 AM »
New member and first time poster. This is my first Weber grill I own and decided to make a table/cart.  However, when I'm grilling, the radiant heat from the kettle tends to get the surrounding top wood frame a bit hot.  Any recommendations on a radiant barrier I can put on the wood to prevent this?

Tin foil! [emoji1] Nice looking cart. You could probably use a metal flashing found at a building supply store. Anything to reflect the heat away from the wood. But on longer cooks the metal would heat up too causing the wood to get hot again.

I've seen everything from metal flashing to cement collars for this type of thing.

Do you have an IR temp gauge by any chance?  If you can get a temp reading of the surface of the wood, you can get an idea of what is effective.  Some metal flashing that extends down below the wood around the bowl would probably work well.  The additional surface area of the flashing will help dissipate heat, I would think.  But for longer cooks, if the area around the flashing is still getting too warm, a nomex gasket between the flashing and wood might be all you need.

Thanks for the info.  I do not have a IR gun but know someone who does.  I found an aluminized heat barrier with woven silica and an adhesive backing.  It can withstand temps up to 2000 F. Think I might give that a shot.

Where do you put the lid when it's not sitting on the bowl?

I put the lid in the slot next to the kettle where the brush is hanging.  I'll take more pics this weekend and post.  I designed it to so the kettle fits with the legs and wheels in case i ever had to take it out to clean or take with me on a trip.  I put stop blocks to keep it the kettle centered and from moving when moving the cart.  Thanks for comments.

I built a cart that took two MT Webers. They were fixed to the cart with 1 inch strapping. There was an air gap of about a half inch all around the edge of the kettle but it never got so hot that I thought it an issue. And I did numerous low and slow as well as hot and fast cooks.
