But I have a QD on my 5 lb tank.  That won't fit I think-right?

Yes, you'll need a quick disconnect adapter--that one in the earlier post is used to refill the 1 lb tank, not your 5lber.  I bought a copper line with two male P.O.L. fittings so I could screw one into the 20 lb tank and the other end into the adapter, like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Propane-Tank-All-Brass-Cooper-P-O-L-x-P-O-L-x-18-inch-Regulator-Adapter-/111469971161?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19f420c6d9. I've been lucky that the SS performers I've restored all had the original adapter, but you can still find them fairly easily.

After all that the kid at the propane shop filled it without batting an eye while I chatted to him.

Exactly what I was going to ask - Did you try?
My local lumber yard does this also and if I blow something up, their name will never be mentioned.  It came this way.  lol
I've always had gas...  And now a bunch of kettles because of this place.  Thanks!
