Before I fire it up, I understand that I should put some oil or fat on the rust spots. What is the best material to use for this? I read one post that said to use raw bacon!

Gorgeous redhead! Definitely leave the original handle on there! As much as I love Zavod handles (and believe me, I do!) when the original one is in good shape, leave it on! It adds to the character. Even Zavod himself will tell you that. Also, SWEET replica buoy in the background!

@56mpg I found this pic from the gallery...your 18.5” red. What would you say the color/stain is for the handle. I want to make mine on this thread this color.

@robs2 that's not my red, but I do have one in the gallery. The gallery is kind of broken at this point, so I can't ID which kettle that is you are looking at. The one in your pic looks like a red oak with a clear finish to me. @zavod44 might know best if a stain was used - it looks like his handywork.
