Title: Thermoworks Smoke Thermometer and Holster
Post by: PorkPatrol on September 19, 2017, 05:23:04 AM
Hi All!

I got this Thermoworks Smoke Thermometer, which I love. It's water resistant, magnetic and darn easy to replace the probes. The temperature is close to perfectly accurate and you can always calibrate it. Plus, the wifi gateway just came out which allows for data point graphing and the ability to monitor your two probes (high and low temp alarms on each) from anywhere. A great great great product all around from Thermoworks.

There's more! I saw they were running a thin/waterproof probe promotion after I already purchased my Smoke. One email and their awesome customer service sent me the probe, free of charge. +1 for quality customer service.

After receiving the unit, I wanted the ability to attach the receiver to my belt. I don't like things hanging from my neck, especially when working over a 400 degree pit! So, being an amateur leatherworker, I made a holster for it out of American Cognac Horween Tannery Leather!

Not yet @JEBIV but my birthday is on Saturday and my suspicion is that my wife might have recently made a purchase on Thermoworks website for approximately the cost of one Wifi gateway

If you are using the app I don't think the mentions work even though I continue to use them.

The app doesn't support mentions. @Troy can speak to this

Thanks Troy for confirming.   I was trying to figure that out last night for hours.   What's the best way from a iPhone/iPad?    Web site or another App?

@PorkPatrol , thanks for your review of the Thermoworks Smoke and nice work with with the holster you made!

I have an iPhone and an iPad. I use the WKC app, for just reading the forums. I have Google Chrome loaded on them as well. If I want to post something (using my phone/pad), I'll just go through Chrome and use it like I would on my desktop computer.

Thanks @Jason for suggestion.  Sounds solid and easy.   Sorry to hijack the thread a little.

@Schaefd2 So I posted and then went back and updated the mention on the browser. If I want to take the time and tag someone I will post and then open up in safari to get mention to work.

Where did you purchase yours? I've been looking at these but it seems you can only get them from thermoworks is that correct?

Yes that's correct! Thermoworks maintains quality control through the vetting of their distributors. You may be able to pick up their gear at physical locations but definitely not on Amazon. Their customer service is great and for the few bucks of shipping, I'd still prefer to go throw them!

Most of my thermoworks orders arrive in 2-3 days depending on what time of day I place the order.  The also include a little bag of Jelly Belly's so that's a plus!

My thermoworks smoke reads 209 when water is boiling but 32.7 in the ice bath. Should I recalibrate or leave alone?

I don't know what their tolerance percentages are, but those numbers aren't actually far enough away to make any difference for BBQ or grilling meats or veggies. There are way too many other variables to consider.

Yeah I read the calibration that said 1.8 +- of 32 which I am but a few nights ago when I received it I used it on a hotdish in the oven and it was  50 degrees off when the hotdish was done. I'm wondering if I have a bad probe?

I don't know. I'd probably call Thermoworks and ask their support folks.

I was looking at one of these today since they are on sale.

It is too bad that they do not offer the smoke in a WiFi-only package where you get the gateway instead of the proprietary receiver. Apparently, you can use just the wifi bridge then you can throw the other controller in a drawer and never use it.

My Maverick probe took it's yearly dump so I decided to get the Smoke.  I have been really happy with my Thermopen and Dot.  Man the Smoke is nice.  If I had one complaint it's the lanyard, just not my thing. The curved base does not allow it to be standing either.  So I took the little metal wire bracket off my Maveric before I threw it away and glued it to the battery cover, works awesome now.

Agreed! And that is exactly how I now use mine: The receiver stays in the drawer. I did not expect that to happen, but here's why:

1) The receiver comes with a convenient lanyard, but the receiver is heavy around your neck enough not to want to hang it there. And there's no belt clip or stand, so it gets put down on a table, facing the ceiling.

2) In my case, the receiver's range is shitty. Truly not anywhere in the same league as the Maverick. I will test it's open distance some other day, but 300 ft? Doubtful.

I realize Thermoworks says keep it "line of sight" but c'mon, this is a RADIO. Gimme some extra oomph to get through normal house walls that don't even have a foil insulating barrier, yeah? I do NOT live in a Faraday cage, so throw a brother some legit RF love, OK?

I get about 25-30 feet of range if the sender is out by the cooker (which, of course, it must be) and I'm relaxing on the couch right inside the door. Go to the kitchen? Dicey. Another room? Forget it, "con" on the display for sure and it's dropped the connection. Again.

***********************

The Gateway is indeed it's own entity. Once you get it setup on your Wifi, with help from your sending unit, you have a better remote because you have your phone. Bring up the app and it updates in about a second. Works the same if over cellular, so take that, Bluetooth!

The only downside is that it does not pick up on the alarms you've set for the sending unit. You have to set them up again for the phone app, and be advised, just as with the regular remote, when one goes off you have to cancel each one separately.

It's really dumb to have the sending unit's alarm still going off after you've muted the remote's notification alarm, and I suspect it's the same if using the phone app. The solution seems to be to not set alarms on the sending unit when using ANY remote, physical or phone app.

[Edit] Not quite true. If using the physical remote, SET the alarms on the sending unit. The physical remote picks them up, and it's the only way the remote will know about alarms. You'll still have to hit a button to silence alarms, once on the remote and once on the sender. Dumb.

Love my Smoke and remotes overall, however. Ain't never going back to a Maverick.
