Title: Anyone try the wooden grill grate scraper that costco sells
Post by: toolhead on April 08, 2017, 05:41:49 PM
It made of hardwood and usage..is that the hardwood will mold to your grates?

Good tool or another window dressing product?

I bypass wire brushes bc i dont wanna serve a loose wire brush at dinner..so i tend to just heat up the grates and scrape with spatula/spoon or tong..whatever is closest to my right hand.

I boglught this hardwood based scraper and dipping back n firth about returning it

I don't have any personal experience, but I've heard good things about them. I saw it at costco yesterday and thought about getting one, but I still have 6 of those triangular twisted steel brushes to use up.

Mine wasn't from Costco but I do like it and I like knowing I'm not gong to get any wire in my food. It works well, just be sure to use the same grooves the first few times to get them molded correctly.

This is the one I use on Amazon.

The Great Scrape The Woody Paddle New All Natural BBQ Grill Scraper https://www.amazon.com/dp/B013S1SM4I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_giA6yb47W7F6B

Once I showed a friend of mine he got some wood and made a few for he and his family.

How much pressure to you have to push the scraper on the grates compared to a wire brush? I'm afraid I would be pushing my kettle around the deck trying to get the grate cleaned. Or is it easier than I'm thinking?
Title: Re: Anyone try the wooden grill grate scraper that costco sells
Post by: kettlebb on April 11, 2017, 01:53:45 AM
I think the key to the wood scraper is to use it while the grill is ripping hot (wear gloves). This helps the groves to continue to form and is also makes sure you aren't scraping any gooey grease or sauce drippings. With a performer it isn't bad at all, my OTG I use slightly less pressure.

1 ga location still had the 19.99 modela nd another only had the new 14.99 model...call around and ask for the sku number...

If you need the new sku i can look it up

Here is shot of the new (i believe) Costco scraper. It's made of oak so should be nice and strong. I was also surprised the "grooves" hold such a sharp edge. Pretty cool idea.

I am going to pass on this. Way too expensive.  I would need 3 of them.  One for the cast iron grates, one for the wires grates and one for the gaser grates.

As long as you're using non pressure treated wood that's a grate idea! I have a few dead trees that I haven't taken down yet that may be a good source of wood for just that. Hackberry isn't really good for smoking, but it is tough as hell so should make excellent scrapers.

Yes, please. I stopped by again yesterday on my way from home and looked around again. Couldn't find them anywhere and the guy I spoke with wasn't sure he had seen them in the store either. Maybe they just haven't gotten any in yet.

@shiner

14.99 NEW model:  sku# 150016
19.99  discontinued model, which your lcw may still stock:  sku# 878442:

if you lcw still have the 19.99 model.. if you prefer..wait for them to stock 150016

these are usually at bunker aisle ends.. or in the grill section/ seasonal lawn section..which tends to be in the middle aisles, by the meat section.

you can call ur lcw and give them the sku number..they can check stock AND check other local warehouses stock.. also.. whether they are expecting incoming stock.

or go to the majors desk when you go into warehouse next time .. just have the sku numbers with you.

I think is said it earlier but two keys to the wooden scraper at first is to be sure the grill is really hot and to always use the same grooves. I don't have any issues with mine. My grates are never shiny but they are clean enough and my food doesn't stick.

Guess I need to get caught up with the times as I'm still using wire brushes. I've never had any issues with them shedding bristles but I always brush after the grate is roaring hot so everything brushes off clean and you'd see any bristles if they did shed. Seems most of the time when. People have issues they're trying to clean a cold gooey grate.

BUT, in an effort to keep evolving the process I'll look into one of these wooden gadgets as a way of eliminating a worse case scenario.

Damn @kettlebb, that's perfect. I still haven't made one. Just doing a quick scrape with a metal spatula.

just another grill knickknack.. at least this one is cheap and provides that piece of mind..

i regret ever reading that grill article ..warning about using wire bristle grill brushes..

cleaning a grill used to be the easy part of grilling.. now its just another process to perfect..

Just got this at Home Depot.....$10. Figured it was a good idea since we did not see them in our local Costco.

Im completely surprised ..and pleasa tly surprised that this post has such interest...i though i was in the minority about bring cincerened about wire bristle brushes for cleaning cook grates when i first posted this thread.

...though this would be a low response thread.

After seeing 60 replies and over 2100 views...this is either a hot topic of concern or we just ha e a lot of fellow costco members here

Probably a combination of both factors...

i will probably break the scraper in this weekend..

figured i would wait until i break in my new weber OEM ss cook grates...the grate size is .10mm smaller than the std grates.. .. probably wont make a difference but wanted to wait to start the grooves with the new ss grates.

thatll probably happen this weekend.. ill post back about the break in process. etc.. it may take several cooks to start developing full grooves into the scrape end.. we will see.

@Uncle Al  just broke in the scraper with new set if oem weber ss grates.

This baby is a keeper...i only did about 10-12 strokes and the very light grooves kept the scraper on track and did its job...after a few more cooks ill have decent grooves and im very pleased with the performance.

You would think that precook is a good break in...but i think its breaks in better post cook after the grates are thoroughly heated...i scraped my grates after removing the food and got a bit more griove breakin.

Im gona buy anotherone  for my 18.5" wsm grates

Who is keeping these outdoors hanging from their grill hooks...the wood is high grade enough to keep outside eithout worrying about splitting etc?

The upside to these grates is that cleaning them is extremely easy...the scrape mess build up on the top side of the scrape blade...so i just grab whatsevers closest with flat tip...spatula tong and slide it across the top and the scraper is clean....

Unlike wire brush which is fairly non cleanable

Thanks for the review. I have been holding off on trying one of these out. I just might just have to pick one up now.

I bought one the other day at Costco. I tried it today for the first time. I really like it, it cleans the grate very well.

after reading this post , i knew i had a couple wooden spatulas that i never use , so why not i figured . they work great ! used a thin one to scrape the inside of the bowl and a wide one for the grill . don't know how long they will last but wasn't using them anyway .

I found several scraps of 7/16 thick base board in my garage left over from a project. This piece already had a 45 cut and was the perfect length. I've been using it for awhile and it works great.  Just putting it out there. I'm sure I'm not the only one with scrap trim in the garage. Mine would be even better if it wasn't painted.

I've got pretty much an endless supply. Can't beat free.
