I think there has been a lot of interest in installing the new lid bale on an older bowl. I've certainly been interested in this since the 2015 Perf was announced. I have not seen photos of this being done yet. I just did this this am.

I think that I saw talk about the hole spacing being different on the 2015 Perf vs. older bowls. I found that the new Lid Bale fit without bending or stretching or stressing. It bolted just fine in the existing holes. I didn't take the pic of it sitting on top of the installed old bale, but it was obvious it works in the existing holes. In the pics below, the old bale has sprung a wee bit from being installed, I think.

A couple of quck questions:
It seems that the rollers are made of a new material. Is this true, or just a color difference? Can the new ones handle higher heat (pizza, griddle, wok, etc.) than the old ones?
The nuts are new. Any idea what material they are made of? I forgot to try a magnet on them.

Good stuff.. Thanks for the post and experiment. I have a feeling this will be a popular mod
that kicks ass.
Who the F posted that they're different? I would have ordered a new bale with the new table :(

You still can. I think it was $30 w/shipping, direct from Weber CS.
The downside is that my 8701 cover no longer fits.
When we find someone to make custom covers for the SS Perf., we need to be sure to have them cut them 3" longer to accommodate the larger lid bale.
Did you have to provide any sort of song-and-dance to get customer service to send you a replacement part for a 2015?

No, surprisingly. I just called and ordered it by part no. I have 3 SS Perfs registered with Weber and the CS thought it was ok for one of them.
Thank you x10..... I had a feeling it would fit, I was just waiting for someone to try it
A most worthwhile mod"
That's pretty sweet, nice upgrade.

Wasn't me. I want these for my MTs! Now I know that they do fit. Thanks for sharing this! Looks good to me!
Awesome I am going to do this!

thanks for sharing!!! This available mod makes me more comfortable about ordering the new MT :)
@shkish, I don't think you'd benefit from the more lean-back lid profile on a standalone kettle.
You'd have a farther reach for the lid and more prone to it becoming a wind sail. The issue with Performers is that you're always coming at the kettle "sideways" and so access is constricted. Not a problem on the others, where you can just step around it. Make sense?
@addicted-to-smoke, I hadn't thought of it that way. Yes it does make sense. When one adds a longer table rig to the MT, wouldn't you also stand 'sideways'?
Hey
@shkish I see what you're trying to do here, cornering me with logic. Well, it won't work!
Or depending on the table's connecting bars, it could still hang from the side instead of the "front" of the M/T and so, permit it's lid to be tilted back. That'd be my preference; to be able to get to the grill from 2 angles, not one as with a Performer. (Some can position their Performer out such that the backside is accessable. I can't.)
Thank you! I was jut about to purchase a new performer even though I don't like the handle placement on the new performer. Ill be ordering the lid ale kit tomorrow.

Interesting. I knew you'd find it.
I wonder if
@zavod44 's performer deluxe (http://weberkettleclub.com/blog/2014/10/15/2015-weber-performer-deluxe-review/) was slightly different? He got a hold of that thing 2 months before they were being manufactured - I bet his was hand built.
The only concern is if the new kettles have holes located differently than old kettle's holes. If they are the same, and $1 says they likely are, then compatibility of the new lid bale is assured.
OR
Let's say the kettle hole locations are now a little different and that ClubChapin's old lid bale isn't "sprung" a little bit. It all still seems to be within an acceptable range of compatibility and work just fine.
ClubChapin thanks again for being our guinea pig. You were also the one that retrofitted electronic ignition to yours, right?
The new lid bale seemed to fit as well or better than the original.
Interestingly, my bale is flat, parallel with the table. The C&B seems to have an angle to it.

Although they don't on Weber's site.

Maybe C&B put it together wrong, or, have different hole spacing...
Indeed, that was me that installed electronic ignition in my SS Performer. Same grill with the new Bale. It's pimped out (also with a lid hook) and I no longer am envious of the 2015 model. I like the look and functionality of the pre-2005 Performer over the post 2004 models. (I do really like the black leg C&B model, one of these would be sweet with a new bale, table, and ignition...)
Great information! The more I use my ss the more the shallow lid bale annoys me. I don't think I'll upgrade to the new style because I think it looks uglier and I want my oem cover to fit.

I hear you on the cover.
I have gotten used to the look pretty quickly. It is nice having the lid close to 90 degrees to the bowl. It is substantially further out of the way.

In some photos yes. Here's one from their site where the lid still does lean some, but if you look closely at the lid bale it has that new flat section at the end. Longer rollers too, yes?

Thanks for pioneering this,
@ClubChapin . I'd *love* to make this mod, but I'd hate to have cover trouble. OTOH my cover is already in tatters, so maybe I should upgrade both things? ;-)
I don't know what options are for covers. It would be nice to find someone to produce (and accommodate the larger bale) them as the 8701s are disappearing anyway.
I wonder if a 2015 cover would fit an non-upgrdaded lid bale SS perf? Seems like it would need to be a couple of inches longer than the covers from '05 - '14. Maybe the new covers are.
Thanks for this post! I, like a lot of others were disappointed these would not fit older models.
ClubChapin do you notice a big difference in the position of the lid between the 2 bales? Just curious if you would recommend upgrading or if you feel it's not enough clearance to make that much of a difference. Thank you.
It is a big difference. See the photos above.
With the new bale, the lid is entirely behind the bale mounting holes. It makes access much easier.
For me, it is $30 well spent.
The downside is the lack of a good cover now. At least rainy season is ending here, so I have the summer to sort this out.
Great. Thanks for the info!
Forgive my ignorance... seeing that this works on the SS Performers... would it also work on the thermoset performers... or are they different and this discussion only hold true for SS?
-Jeep
Jeep, same thing for the later, non SS. The kettles are the same.
Thanks... I have been going back and forth on upgrading my table vs ordering a Copper... Now think my mind is made up... order copper... upgrade current and move it down to the office.

Just ordered the parts, I was worried they'd hassle me about not having a current model but she didn't say anything. I tried to be vague and just order by the part number shown in the first post. Thanks so much for posting that part number. I recently had a custom cover sewn for my modified performer table, hoping it will still fit. Luckily I planned for the possibility of the new bale when taking measurements.

I think the new bale is two inches longer. I'd cut a new cover three inches longer to make it a little easier to get on and off.
Who made your cover, and are you happy with it?
My cover came from
www.grillwraps.com
It is made of sunbrella fabric and should be very durable - tens of years vs the 3-4 of a vinyl cover. Of course, I happened to pick a special order fabric so it took a while to get made and it was expensive. But, I have a -highly- modified table for my performer and it took a lot of fabric (see my post history for pics). I also had some zippers put in for easy on/off. You probably can't compare my cover to what a cover for a regular SS performer would cost. But, these folks were super to work with and the quality of work is very high. If you're willing to spend a little $$ on a cover that should last a very long time, I'd recommend having them give you a quote. Perhaps with stock fabric and no zippers it would be more reasonable for a regular performer. Who knows, maybe they'd do a group order.
Just put my new lid bale on my C/B performer and it fit perfectly. Took about 10 minutes for removal and reinstall of the new. Thank you
@ClubChapin !!!
Major improvement. Thanks, CC.
No worries, glad to hear it is working well.
Has everyone been able to order them ok? Have there been any hassles or denials in ordering these?
Just ordered 65188 from Weber this morning.
I ordered a couple parts for my WSM and just gave her the part no for the bale assembly.
No issues.
Checked the order online and sure enough the correct part number.
Thanks for the find on this.
Not having the cover fit is a non-starter for me, as much as I like the idea of the new bale.
For Bisbee I did the following. Gets the Lid completely out of the way without modifying the bale. Cover still fits.

About to order from ereplacements. Is this the right lid bale?
Code is different to what was posted at beginning of thread

No, that's the older version. The new version has another bend in the "curved" portion.

Do ereplacements sell it yet?
It's unavailable in Australia at the moment. Just trying to work out how to my hands on one
Call Weber and say, "I need part number 65188" which is "Hardware, tuck away lid holder '15" and costs $13.34. Plus shipping.
Edit: Oh, Australia. Not sure about that. Maybe PM somebody in the States and ask if they'd ship one to you.
