Cado Cleanup and 1st Cook

Here's a before pic.

Decided since its a cooker, ill just give it a shave and a bath.

My local OSH decided to put the weber stuff in the "impulse buy" section. I was too lazy to scrub up the old grill (will do it later). As I brought the new grill up to the register, I walked by the griddle and sear grate. Of course, I had to buy it and try it.


Cleaned up nice! Now time to burn something!

I lit 2 chimneys just to get a good burn-off, and dry out everything.


Then I seasoned the grill, griddle, and searing grate.

It was HOT!!! I melted the plastic grips on my weber style tongs and burned my finger while holding the lid. I didn't drop it because I love it too much but I payed the price!!!!! The therm is accurate.

Nothing else left to do but burn a ribeye!!!!


Not too impressed with searing grate but I'm going to give it a second chance with a press and the maverick to make sure the preheat is adequate. The cast is super thick so I think I need to do a proper (longer) preheat. It still turned out "grate"

They look OK to me but others think they are replaced. I'm not the expert unfortunately.

I am not sure who the expert is, but this is why I think they may not be original:

I have three PAT PENDINGS that have rubber treaded wheels, none of which carry the following characteristics displayed in the photo: 
1) mold lines on the tread surface running perpendicular to the primary tread grooves.
2) multiple lines or grooves running the circumference of the side wall tire surface.
3) There appears to be writing stamped on either the tire sidewall or the wheel itself, neither of which appears on weber wheels that I have seen.

It is a little tough to see where the tire and wheel meet.  Interestingly, it almost looks like somebody replaced the rubber tread portion on original wheels, but I certainly can not be sure.   Whatever the case, if they were replaced, it was done a long time ago.  Lastly, and least importantly, you have plastic push buts which probably are not original to that kettle.

Thanks for the OS wheel info. On this kettle I can't say I've gone the way of the purist so the wheels don't bother me so much. They actually roll pretty well even with the flat spot. And the handle is growing on me. Although I have held a grinder to it for a split second. It's not like my newer performer where a small blemish would really annoy me. When I look at this cado I just can't help but smile. (Same is true w/ the others). Ill probably wait til I'm tired of cooking on it to do a full resto. Don't hold your breath though.

I thought I remembered a thread that talked about replacement solid rubber tires and having to heat them in the oven? Anyone remember that? Maybe it was a dream. Yes, I dream I kettle stuff too.

Not sure if this will help.  I found this link to an old catalog earlier today, and I think what you've got here is the Caribbean model.

I've had good luck using a hot water bath for things like this. Big pot-o-water on the stove or on the grill would do the trick, and no fumes of hot rubber in the house. Bring it to 180 or so for a few minutes and use gloves.

For me, they are all cookers.    Like I said before, it is a really sweet kettle.
