You guys are funny. But in this regard, not too helpful.
I do like the suggestion that we crowd source this. I'll stick my neck out on it. I have a Google Drive spreadsheet that I've started to track my webers. Not that I have that many Webers, but I do have a few. I've just made a copy of it and added a few columns (owner, picture and vent cover picture) that we can populate for further information.
And I've set the permissions so anyone can edit.
I invite anyone to add their grills and try to include the kind of information we can use to help ID grills. That's where the pictures should help.
I think the first thing to do is to try to collect information and that's the spirit of this effort. As time goes on, perhaps we can refine the technique. I can think of any number of fancier projects that could do this better, but in this case I think perfection is the enemy of progress (or something like that.
)
My only concern is that someone will get pissed off and wipe out all of the data. I don't know if there is a way to back out edits someone else has done (e.g journaling) so I suggest that if you make some edits, make a copy of the sheet to your own google drive (or download a copy of the sheet - I think that can be done) so that we always have a copy of the most recent populated database.
