Question Restoring Thumbscrew Kettle
« on: June 19, 2022, 04:47:51 PM »
Hello all, restoring a thumbscrew kettle for first time and struggling with the thumbscrews. I have been spraying with penetrating oil for last few days and lightly tapping with hammer to try and loosen/remove the screws. No luck. Maybe someone that has done this before can give some advice. Thanks.

You’re approach is good.  PB Blaster and patience.  Lotsa patience.

Throw a little heat at it as well.

I love the smell of PB Blaster in the morning.

But Kroil is the best product I've used for getting stuck things unstuck.

I have read online articles that report on testing that show that among commercial products, Kroil is indeed excellent. But a homebrew mixture of acetone and ATF did better than any of the commercially available products. The problem is that it separates and needs to be mixed again or shaken before use.

I have done this a couple of times, put some heat on it, then get some candle wax and put it on the threads.  I did it with a car nut that was not budging and it worked with a thumbscrew once.
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.
