Had a great cook yesterday using my new TipTopTemp temperature controller along with the Slow-N-Sear with stainless drip pan and Maverick XR-50 thermometer unit.  Pork shoulder roast for pulled pork turned out beautifully and this TTT really kept the temps where I wanted them.  Started in 24 degree F temps around 6am and finished up with the cook 8 hours later and rest period of two hours, dinner at 4:30pm.  I highly recommend this setup.  Pics to follow.

Pics through the cook.  Notice how after opening the grill to spritz and add charcoal the butterfly valve opens to let more air flow.  About 5 mins later it closes to almost closed when the temp comes up.

That is a cool set up. Thanks for sharing! Food looks yummy too.

Together we'll fight the long defeat.

Wife: Let me guess... you want to grill again

I got a tip top for Xmas and love it. Sadly I've only been able to use it once so far as the temps in central IL have been freezing or below lately...

I hear ya - it held off for as long as I can remember, but winter is officially here.

I am seriously thinking about getting a TTT, but I think I need more practice just controlling temp with the vents. High highly do you recommend the TTT?

I've had one. I think they are a waste of money.

At least they are an inexpensive waste of money.

Sorry, no offense to bamakettles, or anyone that finds them useful. Just my opinion on them.

Funny, I saw this thread title and was intrigued- like, I've done that!  And it was the only time I used it if memory serves.  It works but is not necessary.  I actually enjoy adjusting the vents myself to get the results I want.  I consider the TTT to be a $35 experiment I did for the fun of it.  Some call it a waste of money, but I have a curious nature and like to learn about new things like this and share with the group.  My son has it now but has yet to try it.  He does like the gourmet grate and vortex I gave him since he's more of a hot n fast wing guy than a low n slow roast guy.

"Funny, I saw this thread title and was intrigued- like, I've done that!" LOL!!!! That's awesome. Yeah, when I posted my question it warned me that it's been 120 days since a response and asked if I want to start a new thread.

I appreciate the response. My underlying theory is that I need to get my temp control game on point for my grill using the vents (top and bottom) before I hand over control to a third party. Otherwise it's just another variable in the complex equation.
Cheers

I have one of those and it worked really well the handful of times I used it.  It made the top vent super dirty, so dirty that I stopped using it for that reason.

It's a brilliant design and does work well.

I read my posts sometimes and barely remember them too lol. I definitely wont remember this comment
