Hey guys and girls.

Picked up a M brown and getting stuck into a refurb.

Quick question; how do you guys remove the one touch system which is all rusted up?  I've read that this can snap easily so looking at ways to remove without this happening!!

TIA

Chris

I have three options.

1. http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/second-pickup-2018/msg352058/#msg352058

2. Cut off the screw, drill the rest out and cut (tap) a new thread.

3. I also use a chemical spray to freeze the stuff.
This creates some capillaries and rust dissolver can do his job.
You know what I mean?

I have used a grinder and I am very careful.

@manctooz , are you trying to Salvage it and reuse or just trying to remove and replace with newer style?
CGA,GGA, jumbo joe, 3-18" kettles,22" blue,green,yellow and 2 reds, 1-22" lid mod for pizza, a genesis silver,2 Red SS Performers,2 26ers,1 red, 1 chief and a Ranch Kettle.

I'm ordering a new one touch as the internal blades are rusted through.  If I can salvage parts it would be desirable for the spares kit (particularly the screw). I'm thinking use lubricant and if that fails/snaps progress to option 1 outlined by @Jan M.

I ran into the same problem with a J code I picked up. I tried option 3 for days but nothing was loosening up. I ended up going with option 1 of what @Jan M. recommended and it worked like a charm! By the way I never thanked you Jan for recommending that to me in the link you shared; thanks!

Hacksaw the rod and the nut will fall through. Just had to do that today

Heyjude

That doesn't look worth the trouble to save any parts.
Hack saw is the cheapest. I use a $10 harbor freight grinder with a cut off wheel.
If you're bound and determined to try and get it apart.. Use a torch to heat up the metal.
Heat and Cool a few times and spray the area with some penetrant.
Its no guarantee, but wort a shot.

I don't care if you don't like my Avatar, its there for me..

Fair call. Going to tidy up over the weekend and I'll see how we get on.

As an aside, do any of you order spare parts from anywhere other than Weber direct?

Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.

Ironically, this was from a redhead M code ... Get it done, then replace with new. :)

Q: How do you know something is bull$h!t?
A: When you are not allowed to question it.

Be sure to get some pictures of the during and after so others can learn from the process and marvel at the finished product :D

I'm going to revise this and say put on protective eye wear, cut, keep your eye on the prize so you don't accidentally knick that purty bowl, replace, life will be good  8)
