I don't have a WSM, so I'm wondering if this thing would work on a kettle, and be an improvement on the snake method? Or at least help to keep the temps more stable.

I got one a few months ago and it works great on kettles.  Have used it on my 22 and my 26er.  I have only used it with my Slow-n-sear so far, but it should work great for the minion method (which is basically what the SNS is) or a snake.  In fact you can probably build a slightly fatter or taller snake than normal and get a longer smoke than your standard snake setup.  I don't really need the TTT, but it makes for good peace of mind if you have to leave to run and errand or two while you are smoking something.

I haven't tried it for hotter cooks, but I imagine it should work good for hold a steady 350, 400, 425, etc if you want to bake something on your kettle and maintain as even a temperature as you can.

the pic IS a kettle, isn't it?

It is, but my concern was the temp stability. It seemed to me that it wasn't held for long enough. But I have been corrected.

With the snake it should run solid for 8-10 hours at
225-250.  I only tryed it out with a few pieces of
Charcoal to see if it worked..

Now that I think about it, I used it at 350° for chicken.

After using the wsm for the first time and slow cooking on the kettles for years, the tip top looks really appealing to me. I didn't have trouble controlling the temps on the wsm but I find the vents need tweaked here and there to maintain optimum temp. For example, my vents were more closed at the beginning and more open towards the end. I like the idea of an "automatic" top vent. I would trust an overnight cook more with that.

I watched a video on how to use it.  It said to leave bottom vents closed.  Is that how you guys do it on both kettles and wsm?

TheDude

I still leave a vent cracked on my WSM.

I leave my bottom vent cracked as well.  Not much, about where I would put it when running a snake without using the TTT.
