Best Option for More Grill Space on Performer?

I cannot seem to find a used 26 on Craigslist.   I actually have never seen one yet.  I love my Performer, but need more space for family.  What is the best option for more space.   Is it a hovergrill?  Is there something I should build?  What happens is I end up for example, grilling asparagus and pork chops and just don't have room.

Weber make an expansion rack that might help you out.  I have not used it but looks like it might help you out

That expansion rack would be great for low and slow cooks.   But this might just get in the way for OP's need.

I would just pick up cheap used 18" and run them together.   26" has 508 sq.in. cooking surface. 22" has 363, and 18" has 240.
So, combined is 600sq.in which is more than 26".  Fuel usage won't be much more either. 

I would personally, go for cheap used 22", so I never run out of room. 

My opinion only.

top & tail 3-4 soup cans (burn the plastic liners out in a chimney)

place the food on the 22, space your cans out & put 18" grate on them.


or for shallow cooks (ABTs etc) just place an upside sown (non-flip) 18 grate on the 22 so it is resting on three of the handles...

Same idea , I use another 22 grate inverted so the handles on the bottom grate are north and south and the top grate east and west

Get another kettle.

But you can make half moon grates by cutting 14" or 18" grates and add nut & bolt legs.

I kind of like these bakers cooling racks with folding legs. They come in different sizes and clean up easy in a dishwasher. I like them for stacking and easy rotation and saucing etc. @ 5-$8 makes them almost cheaper than the hardware to make raised grates.





The BGE convertible grate also works well.

That's the bge folding grate I was talking about.  They have them at my ace for 25 bucks. Doesn't look as durable as the weber but I'm sure it would work fine.  I'm probably picking up one this weekend

I actually have a 22" I dug out a year ago.  It just seems more work to light to grills and have them going.   Maybe I need to do that more often.....it's probably the obvious answer.

I would get another Chimney Starter.  Not much more effort involved in lighting 2  at same time vs 1.   Maybe 3/4 full charcoal lit on one for meat and 1/2 full lit for veggie cook on the other 22".

You get more than 700sq.in of cooking surface combined vs 500sq.in. for 26" alone.  You should never run out of room.
