Holy Baked On Crud!
« on: February 14, 2015, 03:06:44 PM »
Picked up a Black DA code Gold off CL for $15. Its really solid, everything is there and ash sweep works great. I thought it would clean up a little easier than it did with some steel wool, soap and water..... I have some barkeepers friend and it needs a couple of good washes to just get it semi-clean. What other options do I have for cleaning the bowl and the lid, or should I just put it back on CL and hope to get close to my $ back? Haha.... Not giving up, just hoping for a miracle cleaning method. Thanks in advance.

"Gently used kettle, black, owned by road tar company"

Into a double extra large garbage bag, sprayed with oven cleaner & left closed for a day or two......

Rinse & repeat if needed.....

See how that goes......it may also be something that those particular chemicals won't completely attack....

Sort of hard water-type haze may need something else after the oven stuff....it's worth it....clear it off & it'll be a good cooker, eh?

Yes..... I could not pass it up for $15. Its really dirty right now, but should clean up well enough to be a cooker for somebody. Got a buddy that wants one for his lake place, and my college kid mentioned considering one also. Have not really looked it over good, but besides the crud on it, its solid, complete and functioning.

Razor blades? Or does it seem like something "in" the finish?

Definitely try the oven cleaner in in a bag overnight that buckie posted.
Also can try good dish soap no water, pour it on and let it sit for 24 hours then scrape with a razor blade.

The razor blade seemed to work pretty well on the gunk. Looks like the tiny spots are in the finish. How about the plastic handles? Soak in soapy water overnight, then scrub?

Tiny spots may be some kind of mineralized water spots.....CLR soak?

Keep in mind that the little "white spots" that give the lid/bowl that "outer space" look COULD BE the early stages of fading. Which is actually a sweet look when its all cleaned up IMO. I've got a scrap 2001 OTS that has these same white specs developing on the lid and bowl. But a deep clean inside and out will tell the tale...

The oven cleaner 48 hours in garbage bags worked wonders on the insides. Thanks! The lid is another story, so I snagged the legs and ash bucket and put it on a Target Copper triangle/wheels/legs. All fit without any issues 👍
