Question for the gurus??
« on: July 05, 2014, 08:58:31 AM »
I just picked up this free genesis.

And am wondering what this adapter is? I haven't seen one like this.

Please enlighten me.

I think that's to fit with an old style propane bottle (pre OPD). You should still be able to screw it into a newer style propane bottle though. The newer style grill side adapters did away with the internal threads and went to an external thread. At least that is my thinking by what I'm seeing

Thanks, I'll see if it will work.

Spray a bit of lube on it. It should thread inside an OPD tank fitting, no problem. Use a wrench to make it snug. They used to use those, but I think that people never tightened them up an had problems with propane leaks. Thus the new black screw on fittings. No tool required! Unless your a tool! Lol..  8)

I can't tell you what that fitting is, Shane, but I can tell you that's a sweet Genesis!  Looks to be in great shape.

(and I recently offloaded my Genesis boneyard to Teer, or I would offer up some spare parts.)

I believe it's called a POL fitting and these will work with the new OPD valves.
As stated above, to work with legacy appliances, the OPD valve has internal threads to accept the POL fittings.

For a wrench-free connection, I picked up some handwheels at my local propane supplier and installed them behind my POL's.
Not necessary, but more convenient when changing out tanks.

The handwheel looks like this...

And to really sex it up, place a short piece of copper tubing of the correct diameter/length, BEHIND the handwheel.
This keeps the handwheel in place, against the POL fitting.

Note:
Only do the handwheel mod if you have the later POL fitting with O-ring seal.
Otherwise use the wrench.

Important note- they are reverse threaded.
Righty Loosey Lefty Tighty!

And I hated them as a kid. Its a knuckle buster taking if off with a crescent wrench.

Genesis is that band that Peter Gabriel was in, and then Phil Collins was in too.

Phil Collins just donated like 20 million dollars worth of Alamo  artifacts to the State of Texas. True story!

As others said, that is the connection that threads into the center of the LP tank.
It'll still work fine and I haven't seen a 20lb LP tank which doesn't have internal threads.
For an updated tool-free option, just unscrew that connection and replace with this.

I've always had gas...  And now a bunch of kettles because of this place.  Thanks!
