Handles - Was Not Aware of This (UPDATED)

I went outside today to do some perving of my Weber kettles - I have 5, so far.
It was a beautiful, sunny -13℃, or 9℉. No cooking, as we're making chicken / turkey soup later.

I wanted to do a handle swap.
Brian's handles off of the red 18, and onto the blue 22 OTG .. AA code. It's my youngest.
The seller never used it, but had assembled it ... sh!t, no box, right. 

It came with these handles.




The lid looks like this.




But, the bowl looks like this ... No tabs to hold the outer part from moving. 




The other ones I have are older, and have this on their bowl.




Is there any type of explanation for this? Am I missing something? 

I ended up doing what I originally intended to do ... Was just a little perplexed, that's all.

If so, you could stick a small flathead screw thru the back, into the outer part of the handle.....

Looks like by design, those plastic handle pieces interlock and key on the steel loop.
Were they moving around on you ?

Well, on those handles, the "outer" part covers the sides of the handle so it can't spin.  You only need the metal tabs when using the flat "outer" wood handles.  Maybe they stopped tabbing bowl handles on newer bowls because of this?   Maybe the lid will soon loose the metal tabs as well?

No movement. I have seen pics of light coloured wood handles on blue kettles. Looks very nice!

Weber switched to the longer bowl handle straps for 2010 and when that happened they probably didn't see a need for the metal nubs anymore as they were designed to hold the old wood handles in place. My 2012 OTS has a bowl handle like that. I've found with retrofitting a wood handle with those straps you just want to get a super snug fit without stripping the wood in the handle. That and I don't roll that kettle when I move it with wood handles. It's a major PIA. I am happy but surprised that the lid handle strap hasn't been changed yet.

I DO like Ken's idea ... for another day, as the sun is going down ... gonna be -24℃ (-11℉) overnight.

I actually made the mistake of ruining a handle doing that. Thankfully it was a crappy 90s spare I had. No Zavdles were injured in the modifying of this kettle.

I still have these handles from 2 redhead rescues last fall ..... aaaaaahhhh .... the stories they could tell. 

Mostly stories of neglect, I would assume ..

Those are in much better shape than the ones that came with my red '95. The guy never covered it and the bowl handles looked like an all you can eat buffet for woodpeckers on kids eat free night. They spun like propellers and disintegrated as I took a Phillips head to them.
