Yes.. there is often water that travels along the bowl and right into the coupling area near where the ash catcher clips in.  Sometimes along the edge as well.  Again, there was never an intention to make them water tight.

I've seen some people knock a hole in the bottom of the catcher -just a small one to release water, but it's not like the ash will come streaming out...

I don't mean mine are submarine water tight. I still get moisture but nothing that turns it into that nasty water and ash mixture.
