Plow Disc as Deffuser
« on: August 21, 2022, 05:56:39 PM »
Has anyone used a plow disc for a deffuser?  I see folks have made wok type pans with them.  Thinking that an old  18 or 20 inch plow (harrow) disc would work on top of a charcoal basket/ring.

Might be kinda heavy, but sounds like a good idea

Haven’t tried it. Mine is customized for the Bayou burner.

I got a couple of 18-inch harrow discs, cleaned them up with angle grinder/flap wheels.  Coated with pam spray and ran a chimney of coal to season the steel.  Heavy (around 15 lbs) but not too heavy.  They are dished about 1-1/2 inches.  So they can be used as a “dome” or a “bowl” deffuser.  However, I did have to trim the WSM charcoal basket so as not to interfere with the cooking grate.  I still need to weld up the hole in the center of the disc.  I wish it was flatter, when using as a bowl, I am limited in the amount to charcoal I can put inside the ring.  But, for $15, I cannot bitch too much.

I’ve used an old concrete saw blade for a deflector no reason a plow disc won’t either

I’ve used a 22” hunsaker griddle as a diffuser on my 26” kettle, the griddle sat on top of a charcoal basket that I made w expanded steel. It worked grate. It costed about $40 a couple years ago.
