What am I looking at here?
« on: July 01, 2013, 12:48:43 PM »
I know it is a copper mist, probably from the mid 70's, I purchased it for $20 but after looking it over I am thinking that a restore project is not going to work out well.  Notice the spots on the lower kettle where the grates sit on how indented and rusted they are.

RE the handle, has anyone drilled a hole and put a single in a 2 rivet spot?

Here is it.

I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

Oh boy, I didn't notice this.  Any advice here?

Thats not so bad for 20 bucks.  Those rust spots by the welds that hold the support straps of the charcoal grate are typical of very high heat against the bowl.  I've seen it happen numerous times when people bank their coals right against those weld spots that support the straps in the bowl.
You can certainly drill a hole in the handle to make it a one hole handle...but why?  Just drill out the original 2 rivets and get a new handle from Brian.  It will look awesome!
As far as the rust spots, sand them down with a dremel wire brush attachment, coat them with 1500 bbq black paint, and see if you can find a high heat touch up for it.
Either way, once you get it cleaned up, put a new handle on, straighten out the ash catcher a bit...this will be one fine looking grill!
You did well for 20 bucks.  All the parts are there!

Oh check that.  I see the leg sockets with the new pics you posted.  That might be a problem.  I think Shaun has some experience with something like this...I'll let him chime in.

75% of my grills look just like this.  I have the handle you need.  Is the leg socket rusted all the way through our just a little rusty?  It looks good to me....

Yes, they are rusted all the way on one part of the 3 part socket.

Thanks for the pm LB. If it's just the one tab on the socket it's a fairly easy fix. I would just drill through the tab, then put a washer on the inside and bolt it in place. It will last a lifetime after that. If you need any extra detail just let me know. By the way, you got a good deal on that. :)

Shaun,

Thanks for the idea, will probably work well, and congrats on your 5000th post.

That's a good deal for $20. I think Shaun, Brian & Jeff all give great pointers. +1 on keeping the handle style 2 rivet and getting a new one from Brian. They're awesome! Looks like a '76-'77.

LB, I would have a lot of fun cooking in that. Enjoy it!

(and re the leg sockets, do as Duke says, just be aware drilling through the tabs is not "easy" so "be careful".

Right, I just bought new bits so I will be taking it slow and steady.
