Back in Black... A mid 70s Texan changes color
« on: June 19, 2013, 09:08:24 PM »

Yeah, Long story short, I sprayed one of the sockets with WD40 of my new-to-me grey fade 22.5 (courtesy of Brian) and it made two black streaks on the bowl, well, I tried dish soap, nothing... so I tried the Pam treatment, the finish returned to its black roots, so I did the entire thing.. It's not AS black as my 2012 OTS, but much blacker than it was when I got it. Even when I did two heavy wash downs with dawn dish soap after and it still stayed black.  If it lightens back to grey from heat and cooking, we'll have to see. I like it grey, but it looks neat black too. I'm happy to have a MBH black/grey 22.5 finally in the stable. Brian also did the new whitewalls on the wheels which are awesome. This kettle has the BAR-B-Q-KETTLE/Patent # vent, old style plastic wheels, but larger dual bowl tabs.. Estimation age year.... 1975

Here it is in a rush re-assemble when it arrived on Friday... I temporarily used metal hubcaps.

Here it is back in black. We'll see how long it stays black,

Brand new walnut stained handle. The original handle was so dry rotted, it split in two when I barely picked at it.

The color change will stay for a while as long as you keep it out of direct sunlight.  I used Pam over a month ago on my first Wood Dale and it is still a darker color.  It is stored in my stoirage shed.

Craig, very nice job on the clean up.  I wish I had installed the handle the way you did on my mid 60's restore.

Awesome grills Craig! Was that an oak handle with a walnut stain? Looks nice! I think if you cook on the black it's probably going to burn the pam off. Try some avocado oil. It has a much higher burn point and just might last.

Thanks everyone! This kettle has some awesome patina on it. The pam brings it out better than the pictures show it.

Lightning: how did you install your handle? I'm not sure i follow.. Lets see a pic. :)

Lawrence, haven't tried Pam on colors yet.

Duke: ill have to give the Cado oil a whirl.

I am right handed, when you look at the front of the grill with the vent towards the from WEBER is written to the left.

I am going to drill out the caps and switch it, Brian has already accused me of having OCD.  He is right but if I am going to have a nice old grill I have to have it right.  Brian is going to help me out and get me some new caps with the purchase of other goods.

I see what you mean now...  :)  On my OTG I have the handle logo like yours is since the "working side" of the Golds is on the opposite side. I keep my regular One Touch and Daisy Wheel kettles handles like they are on my Texan.. in right handed mode.

Duke: The handle on mine is walnut.
