Just got a Vintage Red Weber Kettle
« on: August 08, 2019, 01:34:20 PM »
Hey guys

Just picked up a vintage red kettle grill today. It was in the back yard of a house I’m hoping to rebuild. It was headed to the trash heap before I intervened. I was about to go buy a new one but couldn’t make up my mind.

After a little research, I believe this is from 1976-1977. Pre 1980 for sure.

It’s in pretty good shape. It has some rust and dings but I think it’s really cool. I’m going to just give it a good cleaning, get some new grates, and maybe new wheels (they seem locked up).

BTW, I’m from the Great state of Texas.

Pictures or it didn’t happen

Thanks for the welcome! Is there a resource for parts? Or just go to Lowe’s or HD? I would like wheels that actually roll, lol.

Nice! Your best and cheapest bet is trade or buy with the members. Welcome from just outside Chicago, IL
I swear, when I score a great deal on a 26" I'll stop buying grills... So often.

Thanks for the tip. I figure since the grill was free, buying new grates and new wheel would be at least half the cost of a new one. I don’t “need” vintage wheels, do I ?

Nice cooker.
Spray some PB blaster or Kroil on the axles and turn the wheels. They should free up.

Didn’t even think about that. I’ll give it a try. Thanks

Welcome from the nation's capital. The grates are salvageable don't throw them away, get some evapo-rust and soak the triangle and grates in it and they'll come out damn near brand new.

The charcoal grate has rusted through. No salvaging that but the cooking grate ( there’s two for some reason) need cleaning. I was thinking of getting a new style grate (sorry don’t know the proper name) with the flip up ends.

Good call on the evaporust. I was going to just attack it with some steel wool and some Ajax

That's a solid cooker. Time to get some briquettes and get to work.

Cheers!

After a little bit of cleaning with some degreaser and “0000” steel wool and the addition of some new grates I just picked up from my nearby Ace hardware, the grill looks pretty darn good IMHO.
I didn’t go crazy cleaning inside, just used a brush to clean off the baked on gunk.

I sanded down the handle with some 220 grit and rubbed some boiled linseed oil on it.

Next up will be to work on the wheels but I’m going to do some grilling first.
