How to get rid of factory smell?
« on: June 30, 2018, 11:59:27 AM »
Hi,
I've bought my first smoker-WSM- and grill-Master Touch.
I set them up but both of them smell (kind of oil). Based on what I've read on the net, this is normal for new smokers/grills.
being a newby in the grilling world, I'm not sure how to get rid of this smell. I cleaned both the smoker and the grill with water. What else should be done?
Should I do a burn without meat? If so, for how long? Just a simple burn or something else should be also done?
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the club! Do you have a Weber chimney? Id burn a full chimney in the kettle and maybe 2-3 in the WSM. Then start cooking.

Thank you. Yes, I bought a chimney as well. So, one chimney in the kettle. 2-3 in WSM: at the same time? Or three separate burns?

You dont have to measure charcoal for that, just light some up so its good and hot and let it burn for an hour or so.

Before you burn up a ton of coals.. I’m not sure if @kettlebb means 2/3 of a chimney or 2 or 3 chimneys?

Maybe he can ring in on this?

I think.. most of the smell would come from the oils on the charcoal grates. I would think if you put the smoker charcoal grate on top of the kettle charcoal grate and did a 1 chimney burn then that will save a lot of time and coals.

I was saying 1 full chimney in the kettle and at least 2 full chimneys in the WSM

Thank you All! At the end I burnt one portion in the grill and 1.5 in the WSM. Now I'm all set :-)
