An Even Grater Bigger Basket
« on: March 30, 2018, 11:51:06 AM »
Planning a cook on the 26er for Easter, so no better time to finish up the Bigger Basket I've been meaning to finish. While I was at it, I took a used 22.5 food grate and cut it down to fit the bigger basket. (Bolt cutter for the outside ends, hacksaw blade to score the center, then bent manually to break the center support.) Fits scary good! Might be even better if it were a non-flip type grate, but why go buy one of those? I have not wired it in yet. It seems to fit best when the handle points down, but either way it works as intended - keeping charcoal where it's supposed to be, away from the bowl, and making dumping spent coals easier.

Thanks for watching.

I’ve got everything I need for this project.  I’ll be doing one of these soon [emoji106]

I can’t have a lonely bigger better basket without a grater bigger basket. These are extremely functional.

I am really glad I hung on to my large "Marty Basket." Now I just need an old grate to cut up.

There is no grater love than this! Just got the 26.75 SSS&S grate from ABC Barbecue. Outstanding in every way. Spins like a dream. Fits the Grater Bigger Basket perfectly. @ABCbarbecue did themselves proud with this one. @Mike.stavlund do you have a 26er yet?

This is going to be fun!

That would be last year’s sale. Maybe they will do another?

Marty: Curious what technique you’re using for low & slow with your two sized baskets, and what kind of cook time you’re getting with them?

@56MPG , what is the width and depth of the "even grater bigger basket"?  I would like to make one for my 26er.

Hmmm, not really sure. I just sized it to the 26er had on hand at the time. I gave it away when I sold that 26er a while back. I have another 26er with a real live SnS. It's not that hard to mock up, no real rules to how wide as long as the shoe fits. The SnS is 22.5" wide at the pointy ends, why not start there? Depth (I mean height) is the same as the Weber basket. Depth (now I mean depth) should be close to 7.5".

@56MPG  ....thank you, Marty.  No rules, indeed.  But the width really depends on the depth and it looks like you got the depth to match the opening of the grate, which also matches the discontinued SnS XL.  I'll see if I can find the specs.  I have a SnS+, but want to keep that in my 22.
