Teaching BBQ
« on: February 25, 2018, 08:23:18 PM »
I coach Quiz Bowl at my high school, and I invited my students over for a BBQ to end the season.  A couple of students said they wanted to learn about how to BBQ.  Several students said they wanted to come help...until I said I'd be starting at 5:30 in the morning.  Well, Aaron here took me up on my offer, knocking on my front door at 5:37 this morning.  He seasoned the brisket and set up the snake on the red Mastertouch.  (we also cooked two pork butts on 26ers) I showed him how to maintain your fire, how to use the vents, and some basic principles of low and slow.  He also made the ABTs, and was here most of the day keeping an eye of things.  A bunch of other guys came over throughout the day, but Aaron was there from the beginning.  Tonight, 11 kids came over for a dinner of brisket, pork butt, beans, ABTs, Moinks, coleslaw, fruit, and homemade cookies by my wife.  We played Settlers of Catan, Trivial Pursuit, and Mario Kart.  The brisket and pulled pork were amazing.  We did one extra pork butt for a fellow faculty member who just lost their mom suddenly a few weeks ago, and loves my pork butt.  It was a great day, and a good reminder that BBQ can bring people together and put a smile on their face.

I think the smoke from my grill might have gotten in my eyes, because my eyes are a tad bit watery now... great story, beautiful grills and way to pass along your knowledge and passion. Well done coach!

That's awesome man. Put a smile on my face! We have 16 grandkids, of which ONE we are able to teach to cook! Emily is 9 years old, loves the kitchen, and I bought her her very own Weber Coppertop SJ for her birthday. She's hooked up between me and Mom-Mom. Kids in the kitchen rock!

Way to go! From one teacher to another, you’re doing the right thing introducing them to proper BBQ methods early. I wish someone had taught me when I was in HS. ;)
