Old Propane
« on: January 23, 2018, 08:00:03 PM »
Found an old propane tank someone had set out by the back door at work.  Looks like it is dated October 1992!   It is full, looks to be never used and had the yellow plug that was so old it was dry rotted.  It has the POL instead of the QCC1 fitting. Anything to be careful of?  Safe to use?

I would walk away from that.

Do you really wanna play with a 25+ year old propane tank with unknown provenance?

The reason propane tanks are required to be re-certified every 10 years is they corrode and rust inside.  What you see on the outside is sometimes worse on the inside. If you take it to a propane company, they can safely remove the propane from the tank and probably exchange it for a tank that has been re-certified.  I have seen what happens in a propane gas ignition.  The person had terrible flash burns and lived for about 4 days before passing away.  Not worth the risk.

Don’t walk away....RUN  That’s dangerous as hell and well past it’s safety point.

A tank is $25 at Costco.  Flash burns last a life time

I would not use it or store it in an enclosed location. Your best bet is to do a propane tank swap for ~$20 at the hardware store and you'll have full and much safer tank.
