Ok, so I MIGHT have a problem developing (red 18)
« on: May 12, 2013, 08:06:40 AM »
So I got my first charcoal redhead (my gasser has been a red top for a couple years) a couple of weeks ago (and its AWESOME) and cruising craigslist I see, in the town next to my parents, an ad for Medium size weber grill.  I click on it, hoping for color.  Its a date code H (1986) one touch red 18.  Well, I don't NEED another 18" red (though technically, this is a 3 wooden handle one touch and my other is a 2 metal handle daisy wheel.

But its the next town over from my parents.  And its $10.

I'm the first to email, and I line my dad to go over to check it out.  He doesn't know much about the charcoal ones but he likes adventure.  He looks at it.  He calls me and says The propeller thingy is stuck and there's a couple of chips where the handles are.  And the grates are rusty.  I ask if they are the old thick grates or the new disinte grates.  He didn't know.  The seller sends another picture.  Good sized and moderate sized chips on the top where it meets the handle.

I don't really need another 18".

But Dad's there.  I say offer $5.  I CAN'T not buy a grill for $5.

The seller says I just didn't want to see it get scrapped.  I'll take $5.

So I have another red 18 (now with 3 wood handles and one touch!) for $5.  I need to meet up my Dad when the girlfriend isn't around and find a place to hide it (so it might be a while before we get after pictures).  Here's the pictures the seller sent me-I haven't even seen it yet.  Only the side view was actually in the ad.  Any advice how to unstick the ash sweeper?  I'm thinking copious and frequent sprays with pb blaster.

Date code

Top chips

Grates (I'm pretty sure these will clean up no problem)

+1 to Hogsy-- you stole that thing!  Congrats.

There are of course lots of ways to free up an ash sweep, but what I often do is just cut the dang thing off and replace it for $12 or so.  That way you can really get the bowl clean and the sweep seated down tight to the bowl.

I might try WD-40 (mostly fish oil) but would be reluctant to use PB Blaster. What would a trace of either do to flavor future cooks?

I'd probably try to scrape out the gunk around the one-touch using some not-too-aggressive tools. If that didn't help, I'd remove and replace it.

Regardless, good save!
