Help Me Identify
« on: May 17, 2013, 04:09:49 PM »
I have an H code kettle that I took off my dad's curb that was destined for the dump. I have yet to work on it. I was hoping you guys might be able to help me figure out an issue I'm having with it. The bottom bowl shape is different from my others in that it has a strange lip about three inches down. A normal grate from my other 22s doesn't sit properly and drops into the bowl lower than it should. Any ideas as to why?

That should be a Happy cooker Sears economy Kettle. They have that ridge on the side and an unmarked top vent with smaller vent holes.

Not an original lid for that bowl & vice versa
I've always had gas...  And now a bunch of kettles because of this place.  Thanks!

Look at the bowl handle......NOT a Happy Cooker......they're all one piece, bakelite / plastic.....

this is, I believe, something else..........

Does it look like the grate is supposed to fit in under two bolt ends on the inside where the handle is?

Or, is the handle welded on the outside like reg. Weber?

Bottom vents may offer some clues as to what it is & how to resolve the fit problem.....

    Covered, damper-controlled cooking.....IF YOU PLEASE !!!

If its not a Happy cooker then it's a Sears Economy Kettle. I always get them both mixed up, sorry! I'll edit my first post to not spread misinformation.

Does the top vent say WEBER? If so, Bman is correct that it's not the original lid. Is there an ashcatcher underneath the charcoal tray?

Sears Economy like this:

note the bare black wheels and the ridge. I think Reillyranch knows the most about these on this board

this thread from TVWBB is also useful:

They also speak of the ridge in the bowl and how a modern 22.5" grate doesn't quite fit. pics are dead unfortunately.

A Kingsford kettle has a ridge somewhat like that, but has the handle bolted on from the inside.....grate sets down in a bit, also............very irritating to add & remove the cooking grate....
