Persimmon wood
« on: May 03, 2013, 03:39:18 PM »
Simple things in life - friend from work cut down a persimmon tree. These are the branches - he is going to bring me the trunk too - about 6-7 in diameter. Season it and look forward to see how it works as a smoke wood.

I have never tried it, but have access to a persimmon tree. I am looking forward to hearing the review. My favorite all around and especially for seafood and game bird is manzanita. I usually bring some back from my walks. In fact i'm using some tonight on the shrimp tacos.

When cutting it up it had a nice fruity smell to it. It seems pretty dense for a fruit wood. Like Troy, I always like trying different smoke wood - especially when it is free.

My grandpa had a big one behind his place. I remember going out with him and holding the flashlight while he shot a possum out of it one night. He was always having trouble with different varmints eating the persimmons before they were ready to pick. I miss that old man, wish I could spend another day with him.

Before titanium heads, they used to make for nice gold clubs too. (driver and fairway woods) ;)
